Volcano Bay

Universal's water park is built around a two-hundred-foot artificial volcano and one clever idea: the TapuTapu wristband queues virtually on your behalf, so children float the lazy river or dig on the beach instead of standing on hot concrete stairs.

Why go

Universal's water park is arranged around Krakatau, an artificial volcano with slides running through and out of it, divided into a handful of themed areas with a wave pool, two lazy rivers and a large children's zone. The engineering trick is a wristband that holds your place in every queue while you swim, which genuinely changes how a hot Florida day feels.

It is a half or full day bolted onto a Universal Orlando trip rather than a destination in itself, and works best early, since capacity caps are reached by mid-morning in summer and hotel guests get in first. The climate keeps it open for most of the year and the water is heated. Afternoon storms shut the slides, so front-load everything.

From our guides

Slides run from toddler splash zones to the Ko'okiri body plunge, which drops through a trapdoor. Bolt it onto a Universal Orlando trip — early admission for hotel guests matters, as capacity caps by mid-morning in summer.

Things to do

  1. Krakatau Aqua Coaster

A four-person canoe pushed uphill by linear motors through the volcano, the park's signature ride and the one worth queueing for properly.

  2. Ko'okiri Body Plunge

A drop through a trapdoor floor from the top of the volcano, near vertical and straight down through the middle of the wave pool.

  3. The TapuTapu wristband

It holds a virtual place in every queue and opens the lockers, so waiting happens in the water rather than on hot concrete stairs.

  4. Waturi Beach

The central wave pool has a sand edge and loungers, is shallow enough for small children at the sides, and fills up from mid-morning.

  5. Tot Tiki Reef and Runamukka

Two dedicated children's areas with small slides, tipping buckets and splash play, kept well away from the bigger rides and shallow throughout.

  6. Serpentine body slides

Twin intertwined drop slides launched from trapdoors on the volcano's shoulder, for anyone who found the main plunge insufficient.

Worth knowing before you book: The park closes admission when it reaches capacity on hot summer days, so early entry from an on-site hotel is worth the premium. It shuts for maintenance in midwinter.
