The festival

Held over two consecutive April weekends on polo fields in the Colorado Desert, this is a festival of enormous scale and enormous production: multiple stages, large-scale art installations that move and light up, and a bill that mixes stadium headliners with acts you will not have heard of. Days are hot and dry, nights cool quickly, and the mountains around the valley turn pink as the sun goes. Fashion is a genuine part of the event.

The festival sits about twenty minutes from Palm Springs, which makes the surrounding holiday easy to assemble: mid-century houses, pools, date shakes and Joshua Tree an hour north. Most people rent a house with friends and drive or shuttle in. The second weekend is usually a little cheaper and calmer. Anyone who dislikes heat, dust or crowds of tens of thousands should be honest with themselves before buying.

Empire Polo Club

The site itself is grass rather than mud, ringed by palms and framed by the Santa Rosa mountains. It is unusually pleasant ground for a festival of this size.

Large commissioned installations are scattered across the field, several of them kinetic or lit after dark, and they double as the only reliable meeting points.

The town is a museum of mid-century desert architecture, with self-guided driving routes past houses by Neutra, Frey and Lautner. Best in the cool of the morning.

An hour north, granite piles and twisted yuccas across two deserts, with short walks, climbing and some of the darkest night skies in southern California.
Palm Springs Aerial Tramway

A rotating cable car climbs from desert floor to pine forest at 2,600 metres, where it can be 20°C cooler. A genuine relief between festival days.
Date shakes

The valley grows most of America's dates, and the roadside shake, thick and faintly caramel, is the regional speciality worth stopping for.

Festival shuttles run from hotels across the Coachella Valley to the Empire Polo Club. Ride-hailing works by day but the late-night car parks crawl.

Public transport: Valley buses exist but are slow and infrequent, so the festival shuttle pass is the practical answer.

Good to know

Tickets: Passes are sold in advance, usually months ahead, and weekend one sells out first. Buy only through the official resale channel; the fakes are convincing.
Heat: Daytime temperatures often pass 35°C with almost no humidity. Refill water at the free stations constantly, wear a hat and use the shade structures.
Getting in: Shuttle passes from Palm Springs and Indio save the multi-hour car park exit at one in the morning. Book them with your ticket.
Nights are cold: The desert loses its heat fast after sunset and can drop below 10°C. Take a jacket you are prepared to carry all day.
Book beds early: Accommodation across the valley is reserved almost a year ahead and prices multiply for festival weekends. Sharing a house is the usual solution.
