Snowdon Mountain Railway

Britain's only rack railway has been shoving carriages up Yr Wyddfa since 1896, some behind original steam locomotives, and the reward is the summit view across Eryri to the sea — cloud permitting, which is roughly a coin flip.

Why go

Opened in 1896, this is the only public rack-and-pinion railway in Britain, climbing around eight kilometres from Llanberis to just below the summit of Yr Wyddfa. Some services run behind the original Swiss-built steam locomotives, others use diesel. The gradient is steady and severe, the carriages are pushed rather than pulled, and the line crosses open moor with the Llanberis valley falling away behind you.

The full run to the summit operates through the main season, weather permitting, with shorter trips to intermediate stations when conditions prevent going higher. A return takes around two and a half hours including time at the top. Tickets sell out weeks ahead in summer, so book early. Cloud on the summit is common, and the railway cannot refund a view it has no control over.

From our guides

Trains sell out days or weeks ahead in summer, so book online early and pay the supplement for steam if romance matters to you. If the summit is clagged in, Llanberis consoles with the excellent National Slate Museum.

Things to do

  1. The summit station

Hafod Eryri, the visitor building just below the top, from where a short path leads up to the actual summit cairn.

  2. Steam services

A limited number of departures use the original locomotives from the 1890s. They cost more and sell out first.

  3. The Llanberis valley

The view back down over Llyn Padarn and the old slate workings, which improves steadily as the train climbs.

  4. National Slate Museum

In Llanberis, in the workshops of the former Dinorwic quarry, with working machinery and demonstrations of slate splitting.

  5. Llyn Padarn

The lake beside the village, with a lakeside path, a small castle on a knoll and cold-water swimming for the hardy.

  6. Llanberis Path

The walkers' route to the summit runs beside the line for much of the way, if you would rather earn the view.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Liverpool (LPL)

Nearest airport to Snowdon Mountain Railway, about 88km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Llanberis

About two hours by car from Liverpool (LPL), out on the A55 along the north Wales coast and inland to Llanberis. Manchester is a similar drive.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

The railway station is in the middle of Llanberis and the village is walkable end to end. Parking fills early in summer, so arrive before the first departures.

Public transport: Trains reach Bangor and buses run from there to Llanberis, so it can be done without a car, though evening services thin out.

Where to stay

Village inns, B&Bs and bunkhouses, with self-catering cottages across the valleys and campsites near the lakes. Very few hotels of any size.

  • Best base overall

    Llanberis

The railway starts here, along with the Slate Museum and the lake path, so you can walk to the first train. The one street gets congested in summer and parking is a daily battle.

  • Best for couples

    Beddgelert

A stone village where two rivers meet, prettier and calmer than Llanberis, about twenty minutes away. Fewer beds, and you will drive to the railway.

  • Best value

    Caernarfon

The castle town on the coast, with far more hotels, pubs and cheaper rooms, a quarter of an hour from Llanberis. Useful in bad weather when the mountain is a write-off.

  • Best with children

    Betws-y-Coed

Eryri's tourist hub to the east, with river walks, outdoor shops and family-friendly inns. Forty minutes to the railway but a better wet-day base.

Worth knowing before you book: Summer weekends and half terms book out Llanberis, and train tickets sell weeks ahead, so secure the railway seat before the room.

Good to know

Book ahead
Summer departures sell out days or weeks in advance. Book online and choose the earliest train for the clearest air.
Weather
Services are curtailed at short notice if wind or cloud makes the upper section unsafe. Partial trips are usually offered instead.
Timing
You get around half an hour at the summit before the return departure, which is enough for the cairn and little else.
Pack this
The summit is far colder and windier than Llanberis, often by several degrees. Take a warm layer and a waterproof.
Parking
Llanberis car parks fill early in summer and the wider national park uses paid parking. Arrive early or take the bus.
