Semmering Railway
The world's first true mountain railway, finished in 1854 and now UNESCO-listed, curls over the Semmering Pass on a parade of stone viaducts that look borrowed from a Roman aqueduct catalogue.

Why go
Completed in 1854 over the Semmering Pass, this was the first mountain railway in Europe built to standard gauge, and it remains in daily use. The line climbs through tunnels and over stone viaducts, several of them two storeys of arches, curving around the hillside so the train repeatedly comes back into view of where it has just been. UNESCO listed it in 1998 for the engineering and the landscape together.
It is an ordinary railway, so a regional train from Vienna towards Mürzzuschlag rides it without reservations or surcharges, taking roughly an hour and a half each way. The walking trail alongside is the other half of the experience, letting you photograph the viaducts from outside. Autumn colour and clear winter days suit it best, and a return trip fits comfortably into a day from Vienna.

From our guides
The genius is accessibility: it's a normal line, so any regional train from Vienna to Mürzzuschlag rides it for a few euros — no reservations, no panoramic-carriage surcharge. Sit on the left leaving Vienna, and walk the Bahnwanderweg trail alongside for the viaduct views.

Things to do
-
Kalte Rinne viaduct
The line's showpiece, a two-tiered curve of stone arches high above a ravine. Best seen from the walking trail rather than from the train.
-
Bahnwanderweg
A signed footpath shadowing the railway between Payerbach and Semmering, with viewpoints onto the viaducts. Around four hours at a steady pace.
-
Semmering station
The summit stop, with an exhibition on the line's construction and Carl Ritter von Ghega, the engineer who designed and built it.
-
Rax and Schneeberg
The two limestone massifs on either side of the pass, both served by cableway or cog railway from the valley below.
-
Payerbach-Reichenau
The village at the foot of the climb, once a summer resort for Viennese society, with villas from that era still standing.
-
Sit on the left
Leaving Vienna, the left-hand windows give the valley views and the best sight of the line curving ahead of you.

Getting around
The railway is the attraction, so simply ride an ordinary regional service between Gloggnitz and Mürzzuschlag. The Bahnwanderweg walking trail starts near Semmering station and runs alongside the line for the viaduct views.
Public transport: Excellent: ordinary ÖBB regional trains serve every station on the line, no reservation needed.

Where to stay
Faded imperial spa hotels on the pass, plus valley Gasthöfe and holiday apartments. No chains, no resorts, and several places shut between seasons.
-
Best base overall
Semmering
The pass village itself, strung along the hillside with grand old spa hotels and a station on the line, so you can ride a stretch before breakfast. Steep, scattered and very quiet out of season.

Mürzzuschlag
A working Styrian town at the southern end of the line, with ordinary guesthouses at ordinary prices and trains every hour. Not remotely pretty, but it puts the viaducts twenty minutes away.

Best with children
Reichenau an der Rax
Down in the valley below the pass, with a cable car up the Rax, flat riverside walks and family pensions. Handy if you want a mountain holiday with the railway as one day out.

Closest to the sights
Payerbach
Sits right under the line's most photographed viaduct and marks the start of the Bahnwanderweg trail. Barely more than a village, so expect a couple of inns rather than choice.

Worth knowing before you book: Many Semmering hotels close in November and again after Easter, and winter weekends fill with Viennese families, so check opening dates before booking trains.

Good to know
- Tickets
- Regional trains need no reservation and the fare is modest. Vienna's regional day tickets can cover part or all of the route.
- Timing
- Autumn gives colour and clear air; deep winter can be spectacular but foggy. Check the forecast, since the pass makes its own weather.
- Direction
- Vienna to Mürzzuschlag climbs, and the reverse descends. Either works, but the ascent builds better as a journey.
- Walking
- The trail alongside is well signed but involves real ascent and descent. Wear proper shoes and allow half a day.
- Combine it
- Trains continue on towards Graz, so the line works well as part of a longer journey rather than an out-and-back.
