Nashville
Lower Broadway's honky-tonks stack live bands three storeys high from morning until 3am, free to enter — tipping the band is the cover charge, so carry small notes.

Why go
Tennessee's capital is a working music town before it is anything else, and that shows up everywhere: songwriters testing new material in small rooms, session players filling in on a Tuesday afternoon, studios still cutting records a few streets from the tourist strip. Downtown is loud, neon and unapologetic. Cross the river or head east and the city turns into low-rise neighbourhoods of porches, record shops and hot chicken.
Three or four nights covers it comfortably, and the city pairs well with Memphis three hours west for a broader run at American music. Spring and autumn are the pleasant seasons; July and August are hot and heavily humid. Weekends downtown belong to hen and stag parties, so midweek gives better playing and cheaper rooms. Light sleepers should stay away from Broadway itself.

From our guides
Weekends belong to the bachelorette parties; aim for a Tuesday or Wednesday when the players outnumber the pedal taverns. For the serious stuff, book The Station Inn for bluegrass or a songwriters' round at the Bluebird Café, where Nashville's hit machine road-tests its material.

Things to do
-
Lower Broadway
Several blocks of multi-storey honky-tonks with live bands from late morning until the small hours, free to walk into. Tipping the band is how it works.
-
Country Music Hall of Fame
A serious museum rather than a shrine, tracing the music from Appalachian string bands to the present, with instruments, costumes and listening booths.
-
Ryman Auditorium
The former tabernacle that housed the Grand Ole Opry for thirty years, with wooden pews and famously good acoustics. Worth a tour even without a ticket to a show.
-
RCA Studio B
The Music Row studio where a startling proportion of the country canon was recorded, visited by guided tour from the Hall of Fame.
-
East Nashville
Across the river, a neighbourhood of bungalows, dive bars and vintage shops where a lot of the city's musicians actually live and play.
-
Hot chicken
The local dish: fried chicken rubbed with cayenne paste, served on white bread with pickles. Order a heat level below whatever your pride suggests.

Getting around
Lower Broadway and the Gulch are walkable, but the Station Inn is a short hop and the Bluebird Cafe is out in Green Hills, so plan on a ride-hail for those.
Public transport: Limited: buses cover the city but run infrequently at night, and visitors mostly use ride-hail.

Where to stay
New downtown hotels and a strong boutique scene, plus a large short-term rental market in East Nashville bungalows. Party houses are now restricted in many neighbourhoods.

Best base overall
Downtown and SoBro
Walking distance to Lower Broadway, the Ryman and the country music museum. Weekend noise from the honky-tonks and pedal taverns is relentless, and parking is charged and scarce.

Best for couples
The Gulch
A short walk from Broadway with better restaurants, rooftop bars and quieter nights. Prices sit above downtown and there is little sense of old Nashville.

Best value
East Nashville
Across the river, with independent bars, listening rooms and rentals in bungalows at far lower rates. It is a ride share back from downtown, which adds up over a week.

Closest to the sights
Music Row and Midtown
Near the Bluebird Cafe side of town and the universities, with mid-range hotels and student-priced bars. Bluebird bookings, not location, are the real constraint.

Worth knowing before you book: Weekends are bachelorette season and cost far more than midweek, and the CMA Fest in June fills the city entirely.

Good to know
- Tipping
- Bands on Broadway play for tips rather than a fee, so carry small notes and put something in the bucket every set.
- Timing
- Tuesday and Wednesday nights bring better players and far fewer parties than the weekend. Spring and autumn are the kindest months for weather.
- Book ahead
- The listening rooms where songwriters perform in the round are small and sell out quickly. Reserve as soon as dates are released.
- ID
- Venues card at the door regardless of how old you look, so carry a passport. Many bars are over-21 after a certain hour.
- Getting around
- Downtown is walkable but the neighbourhoods are not linked well by public transport. Budget for ride-hailing in the evenings.
