Kochi

Kerala cooking is the gentle giant of Indian food — coconut-milk fish curries, appams like lace-edged pancakes, and thalis that keep arriving until you surrender — and Fort Kochi serves it with colonial-era atmosphere and Chinese fishing nets creaking on the shoreline.

Why go

A port on the Malabar coast made of several distinct parts: Fort Kochi with its Portuguese, Dutch and British layers, Mattancherry with its synagogue and spice warehouses, and the modern city of Ernakulam across the water. The old quarter is low-rise, shaded and easy to walk, with cantilevered Chinese fishing nets along the shoreline and the smell of ginger and cardamom coming out of the godowns.

Two or three nights here pairs naturally with the Alleppey backwaters, the tea hills at Munnar or a flight further south to the beaches. The Kochi-Muziris Biennale takes over the old warehouses in alternate winters. November to February is dry and comfortable, while the monsoon from June brings heavy, dramatic rain and much lower prices. Anyone expecting a beach city should look elsewhere entirely.

From our guides

Buy prawns fresh from the nets and have a shack grill them on the spot. A backwater houseboat from nearby Alleppey adds a floating feast. Visit November to February, before the heat builds.

Things to do

  1. Chinese fishing nets

The cantilevered nets on the Fort Kochi shoreline are worked by teams of men and are best watched at dawn or dusk. Fish bought here is grilled at the stalls behind.

  2. Paradesi Synagogue

In Jew Town, Mattancherry, floored with hand-painted Chinese tiles no two of which are alike, and hung with glass lamps beneath an eighteenth-century clock tower.

  3. Kathakali performance

The Keralan dance drama, with hours of make-up, elaborate costume and a whole language of eye movements. Arrive early to watch the painting.

  4. Mattancherry spice streets

Warehouses still trading pepper, cardamom, ginger and turmeric, much as they have for centuries, with the smell reaching the street.

  5. Kerala cooking

Coconut and curry leaf run through everything, from appam with stew to karimeen fish and meen moilee, finished with strong filter coffee.

  6. Alleppey backwaters

A couple of hours south, the canals and lagoons are travelled by houseboat or, more cheaply and often better, by public ferry and small canoe.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Kochi (COK)

Nearest airport to Kochi, about 27km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Fort Kochi

Cochin International (COK) is about an hour and a half by taxi south to Fort Kochi, longer in traffic. Prepaid taxis and app cabs are readily available at arrivals.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

Fort Kochi and Mattancherry are walkable and best explored on foot or by autorickshaw. Public ferries cross the harbour to Ernakulam and Vypin, and Kochi's metro serves the mainland city.

Public transport: Decent. Ferries, autorickshaws, city buses and a modern metro on the Ernakulam side make a hire car unnecessary.

  • Best base overall

    Fort Kochi

The colonial quarter, walkable end to end, with the Chinese fishing nets, the cafes and the Kathakali theatres all close by. It is quiet after about ten at night, deliberately so.

    Mattancherry and Jew Town

Spice warehouses and antique shops around the synagogue, with heritage homestays in old merchant houses a short walk from Fort Kochi. Streets are busy and dusty during trading hours.

  • Best value

    Ernakulam

The modern mainland city has plenty of business hotels at prices the heritage quarter cannot match, plus the train station and metro. You cross by ferry or bridge to reach the sights.

  • Best with children

    Bolgatty and Willingdon Island

Island hotels with pools, gardens and backwater views, reachable by ferry, which children tend to treat as the main attraction. There is little to walk to once you are there.

Worth knowing before you book: November to February fills fast, and Christmas and New Year rates in Fort Kochi roughly double. Book the Alleppey houseboat separately and check whether it includes all meals.
