The experience

Udawalawe's open grassland and reservoir make it one of the most reliable places anywhere to see wild Asian elephants, with herds visible from the track on almost every visit rather than the fleeting glimpses common in denser parks. The flat terrain also means better sightlines for children in a jeep, without the branches and undergrowth that block views elsewhere. Beyond elephants, the park holds water buffalo, crocodiles and a strong variety of birdlife around the reservoir's edges.

A morning or afternoon safari, roughly three to four hours, is the standard visit, and pairs naturally with the neighbouring Elephant Transit Home, where rescued and orphaned calves are bottle-fed at scheduled times before eventual release. It works well as a stop between the hill country and the south coast, requiring no more than a half-day detour. The dry season, May to September, gives the clearest views as animals concentrate near remaining water.
