Vilnius
Vilnius keeps its nightlife charmingly self-contained: the baroque Old Town's bars fill from Thursday, Vilniaus gatvė runs the reliable crawl, and the self-declared 'independent republic' of Užupis — an artists' quarter with its own tongue-in-cheek constitution — supplies riverside beers at artist prices.

Why go
One of the largest baroque old towns in eastern Europe is small enough to cross in half an hour and full of courtyards you can simply walk into. The Neris and Vilnia rivers meet below a hill with a brick tower on it, glass towers stand across the water, and the bohemian Uzupis quarter has declared itself a republic with its constitution nailed to a wall in dozens of languages.
Two or three nights is right, often combined with Riga or Tallinn on a Baltic loop, or with the Curonian Spit on the coast. Summer nights barely darken and the courtyards fill; winter is cold, snowy and cheap, with the bars and cellars doing the work. Prices sit well below western Europe, which is a large part of the weekend appeal.

From our guides
Lithuanian craft brewing is quietly excellent, so order whatever šviesusis is on tap, and let Kablys handle the club shift. In summer the sky barely darkens, which makes 3am feel like a clerical error.

Things to do
-
Uzupis
A small district across the river with galleries, cheap terraces and a tongue-in-cheek constitution that includes the right of a dog to be a dog.
-
Gediminas Tower and the hill
A funicular or a short climb reaches the surviving tower of the upper castle, with the old town below and the new city beyond the river.
-
St Anne's and the Bernardine church
A late Gothic brick facade that Napoleon reportedly wanted to carry back to Paris, beside a larger monastery church and a riverside park.
-
The old town bar streets
The reliable evening crawl runs along a few connected streets in the old town, filling from Thursday and staying busy until very late.
-
Lithuanian craft beer
Farmhouse brewing survived here in an unbroken line, and both the pale sviesusis and the dark baked-style beers are worth ordering.
-
Trakai castle
A red-brick island fortress on a lake half an hour west, reachable by train, with kibinai pastries sold in the Karaim village beside it.
