The White Desert
Four hours from Cairo's chaos, Egypt's White Desert scatters wind-carved chalk formations — mushrooms, chickens, sphinxes, depending on your imagination — across a floor that glows under a full moon like another planet entirely.

Why go
Chalk formations stand out of a pale floor in shapes the wind has spent millennia editing: mushrooms, towers, things that look like animals from one angle only. The surrounding Farafra depression is flat, stony and silent, and under a full moon the ground reflects enough light to walk by. Nearby lie the black basalt hills of the Black Desert and a low ridge scattered with quartz crystal.
Access is by 4x4 from Bahariya oasis, roughly four to five hours from Cairo, and trips run as one or two night camping safaris with a driver, a cook and mattresses on the sand. October to April is the season, and winter nights fall close to freezing. This is a remote part of Egypt's Western Desert, so check current government travel advice and permit requirements before committing.

Things to do
-
The chalk formations
The signature landscape sits north of Farafra and is best at dawn and dusk, when low light gives the white rock colour and shadow. Camps pitch among them.
-
Crystal Mountain
A ridge of quartz crystal beside the road with a natural arch, glinting in sun. A short stop rather than a destination, and taking pieces is not on.
-
The Black Desert
Volcanic hills capped in dark basalt fragments, climbable in twenty minutes for a view across the plain. It looks nothing like the white section an hour on.
-
Agabat valley
A wide basin of eroded chalk cliffs and dunes between the two deserts, and the best stretch for driving slowly with the window down.
-
Bahariya oasis
Palm groves, hot springs and a small museum of gilded Greco-Roman mummies found here in the 1990s. Most trips start and finish with a night in the village.
-
A night with no light
There is no settlement for many kilometres, so the stars are extraordinary. Desert foxes usually turn up once the cooking is done.

Simple oasis lodges and guesthouses, several with their own hot spring, plus operator camping in the desert. No hotels of any scale and nothing resembling a chain.

Bahariya Oasis, around Bawiti
The village where every White Desert trip starts, with simple lodges, hot springs and the operators themselves. Facilities are basic and there is little to do between trips.

A camp in the White Desert
Mattresses beside the chalk formations, dinner by fire and a sky with nothing in the way. There are no facilities at all, so it is one night, not several.

Farafra
The smaller oasis south of the desert, with a couple of guesthouses and hot springs, and far fewer visitors. Transport links are thin and most tours run from Bahariya.

Four hours away, with the country's full range of hotels, and many operators collect from here. It means a long drive at both ends of the trip.

Worth knowing before you book: Book through a Bahariya-based operator and check current government travel advice, since desert routes can close. October to April is the season; nights are cold and camps supply little.

Good to know
- Safety
- The Western Desert is subject to travel advisories and permit rules that change. Check your government's current advice and travel with a licensed Bahariya operator.
- Getting there
- Buses and shared cars run from Cairo to Bahariya in around four to five hours. Most operators include the transfer in the trip price.
- Timing
- October to April only. Winter nights can approach freezing, and summer daytime heat makes camping impractical.
- Pack this
- A proper warm layer, a sleeping bag liner if you feel the cold, a torch, wet wipes and more water than you plan to drink.
- Facilities
- There are no toilets, showers or shops in the desert. Everything is carried in and, importantly, carried out again.
