Germany, Austria and Switzerland

The Lake Constance loop

Three countries, one lake, no hills that matter: the 260-kilometre Bodensee-Radweg circles Lake Constance past orchards, vineyard villages, the flower island of Mainau and Lindau's lion-guarded harbour, with the Alps posing across the water.

Why go

A large lake sits where Germany, Austria and Switzerland meet, and a signposted cycle route of about 260 kilometres runs the whole way round it. The riding is flat, the surface is good and the Alps stand across the water on the southern side. Orchards, vineyards, reed beds and small harbour towns fill the shoreline, and ferries crossing the lake let you shorten or reorder any stage at will.

A week rides the loop at a leisurely pace with time for the towns; four days is enough if you use the boats. May to September is the season, and September brings the fruit harvest and quieter paths. Three countries mean three currencies and three phone networks to think about. The route is popular, so book accommodation ahead in summer.

From our guides

A week is leisurely, and ferries let you shortcut any stage — which feels like cheating and is in fact the system working. The cycle paths are Swiss-grade throughout. Go in September for the harvest, when every second farm sells apple juice from a table.

Things to do

  1. Mainau

An island of gardens reached by a footbridge, planted with tropical species, a butterfly house and seasonal displays of tulips and dahlias.

  2. Lindau harbour

A Bavarian island town whose harbour mouth is guarded by a stone lion and a lighthouse, with the Alps behind on a clear day.

  3. Konstanz old town

The largest town on the lake, with a medieval centre that escaped wartime damage and a promenade linking through to the Rhine.

  4. Meersburg and the ferry

A terraced wine town with two castles facing Konstanz across the water, connected by a car ferry that runs day and night.

  5. Rhine Falls

A short detour west of the lake reaches the largest waterfall in Europe by volume, with boats running out to the rock in the middle.

  6. Bregenz and the lake stage

The Austrian corner stages opera on a floating stage each summer, and a cable car climbs the Pfander for the wide view.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Friedrichshafen (FDH)

Nearest airport to Konstanz, about 25km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Konstanz

Friedrichshafen (FDH) is about 20 minutes by bus or taxi to Friedrichshafen town, then a ferry across to Konstanz in roughly 40 minutes, or an hour and a quarter round the lake by train. Zurich is the larger airport, around two hours away by train.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

The Bodensee-Radweg circles the lake on flat, well-surfaced paths, and Konstanz's old town is walkable. Car ferries and passenger boats crisscross the lake, so any stage can be shortened by water.

Public transport: Very good. Trains ring the lake in all three countries, boats cross it and bikes travel on both.

Where to stay

Lakeside gasthofs, family hotels and holiday flats, many geared to cyclists with bike sheds, plus campsites. Swiss-shore prices are noticeably higher than German or Austrian ones.

  • Best base overall

    Konstanz

The biggest town on the lake, with the ferries, the trains and the old centre, and Switzerland across the street. Rooms are pricey and the university keeps it busy.

  • Best with children

    Lindau

An island town with a harbour, a lido and a compact old quarter, on the German side. Lovely, but parking and rates both bite in summer.

  • Best for couples

    Meersburg or Überlingen

Vineyard slopes and half-timbered lanes on the northern shore, with the car ferry to Konstanz. Steep streets and limited beds in the older parts.

  • Best value

    Bregenz, Austria

The Austrian corner, generally cheaper than the Swiss and German shores, with the cable car up the Pfänder. It fills and dearer during the summer festival.

Worth knowing before you book: The Bregenz festival in July and August fills rooms for miles around. Riding the loop means booking each night, and cycle-friendly gasthofs go first.
