Southern coast
Sri Lanka's south serves the best-value feast in the Indian Ocean: rice and curry spreads with a dozen dishes, hoppers crisped at street stalls after dark, and crab curries in Galle Fort that justify the flight alone.

Why go
Eating well is the organising principle here. A rice and curry lunch arrives as a dozen small dishes, dhal and jackfruit and coconut sambol among them, for very little money; after dark, hoppers are spun in cast-iron pans at roadside stalls. The coast supplies crab, prawns and seer fish, the hills behind supply the spice, and nobody is in any hurry about the whole business.
Basing yourself in or near Galle and travelling out by train or tuk-tuk keeps the choice wide without long transfers. Ten days allows Galle Fort, a couple of beach towns and a cookery lesson without rushing anything. December to March is the settled season on this side of the island. Vegetarians are unusually well served, and anyone wary of chilli should say so early and often.

From our guides
Kottu roti — chopped flatbread clattering on a griddle — is the national soundtrack. Order rice and curry at lunchtime, when it's freshest, and visit December to March for dry-season weather.

Things to do
-
Rice and curry at lunchtime
The full spread is cooked for the middle of the day, which is when it is freshest and cheapest. Expect a dozen small dishes around a mound of rice.
-
Kottu roti after dark
Chopped flatbread, egg and vegetables worked on a griddle with two blades, the clatter audible down the street. Order it with cheese at least once.
-
Crab curry in Galle Fort
Lagoon and sea crab cooked in a dark, coconut-rich gravy, served with a bib and a hammer. Messy, slow and worth blocking out an evening for.
-
Hoppers and egg hoppers
Bowl-shaped fermented rice pancakes, crisp at the edge and soft in the middle, cooked to order at breakfast and again late at night with lunu miris on the side.
-
A spice garden or cookery class
Inland from Galle, small plantations explain cinnamon, cardamom and pepper in an afternoon. Many run hands-on classes that end in the lunch you cooked.
-
Short eats and Ceylon tea
Bakery counters sell samosas, fish buns and cutlets by the tray, eaten with strong milky tea. It is how the whole coast fills the gap before dinner.
Getting there
-
Fly to
Colombo (CMB)
Nearest airport to Southern, about 148km away as the crow flies.
-
Then
To Galle
Mattala (HRI) sees very few scheduled flights, so plan on Colombo (CMB) and the southern expressway, about two hours by car or airport coach down to Galle.

Getting around
The coastal railway and tuk-tuks connect Galle with Unawatuna, Weligama and Mirissa, and Galle Fort's restaurants are all within its walls.
Public transport: Strong by regional standards: cheap coastal trains and frequent buses run the length of the southern shore.

Homestays and guesthouses where the family cooks, small villas with a chef, and a few design hotels around Galle. Big beach resorts are rarer here than further north.

Best base overall
Galle Fort
The walled old town is where the region's best cooking lives, from crab curry to modern Sri Lankan tasting menus, with rooms in restored merchant houses. No beach, but the ramparts compensate.

Unawatuna
A reef-sheltered bay minutes from Galle, with calm water, cheap rice-and-curry places and many small hotels. Narrow beach, and busy through the dry season.

Quietest
Ahangama and Midigama
A string of villages between Galle and Weligama, with villas and surf camps set among palms. Good local food along the road, though you will want transport after dark.

Best value
Matara
A working coastal city with the cheapest rooms and some of the best unfussy local eating, plus the end of the coastal railway. Few visitors and little polish.

Worth knowing before you book: The good Galle Fort tables need booking a day or two ahead in season, and December to March rooms across this coast sell out well in advance.

Good to know
- Timing
- December to March brings dry weather to the south and west. The rest of the year sees afternoon rain, though the eating does not suffer.
- Chilli
- Sri Lankan heat is serious. Ask for less if you need it, and keep coconut sambol and curd nearby, because water makes it worse.
- Water
- Stick to bottled or filtered water, and be a little careful with ice and cut fruit at the smallest roadside stalls.
- Etiquette
- Eating rice and curry with the right hand is normal and welcomed. Cutlery is always available if you would rather not.
- Cash or card
- Street stalls and small kitchens are cash only. Withdraw in Galle or Matara, where ATMs are reliable.
