Sri Lanka

South coast

Between Galle's Dutch fort and the surf town of Weligama, Sri Lanka's south coast strings together palm-fringed bays, whale-watching out of Mirissa and rice-and-curry feasts for a couple of pounds.

Why go

Palms lean over bay after bay between Galle and Tangalle, and the rhythm of a day rarely changes: swim early, retreat inland for a long lunch, return when the sand cools. Conditions vary enormously from cove to cove, some flat and shallow, others stacked with surf, so it pays to move around. Fishing boats still work the shore, and the green interior begins within minutes of leaving it.

A week between Galle Fort and Mirissa covers a first visit comfortably; two weeks lets you reach the quieter east of the strip. December to March is the reliable dry season here, and from May to September the other side of the island takes over. Coastal trains hug the shoreline and cost very little, which makes hopping between towns easy and slightly chaotic.

From our guides

Trains along the coast cost pennies and provide the scenery for free. December to March is the dry season here; a first surf lesson in warm, forgiving Weligama water is practically a rite.

Things to do

  1. Galle Fort at sunset

Dutch ramparts enclosing a grid of colonial streets, cafés and a lighthouse. Locals walk the walls in the last hour of light and boys jump from them into the sea.

  2. Learning to surf at Weligama

A long sandy bay with slow, forgiving waves and more surf schools than you can count. Warm water and a soft bottom make it one of Asia's kindest places to start.

  3. Blue whales off Mirissa

Boats head out at dawn from November to April in search of blue whales and sperm whales. Seas can be rough, so take something for motion sickness.

  4. Hiriketiya's horseshoe bay

A small, near-circular bay near Dickwella with a beginner wave on one side and a reef break on the other, plus the most laid-back café strip on the coast.

  5. Stilt fishermen at Koggala

The technique is largely performed for cameras now rather than practised for fish, so agree a price first if you want a photograph, and take it as theatre.

  6. Udawalawe elephants

About two hours inland, a national park with reliable elephant sightings on open grassland. Easier and less crowded than Yala, and doable as a long day trip.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Colombo (CMB)

Nearest airport to Galle, about 133km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Galle

Koggala (KCT) handles only occasional domestic flights, so almost everyone arrives at Colombo (CMB) and takes the southern expressway to Galle, about two hours by car or airport coach.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

Coastal trains and tuk-tuks link Galle with Unawatuna, Weligama and Mirissa for very little, and Galle Fort itself is small enough to walk.

Public transport: Genuinely good: the coastal railway and frequent buses run the whole strip, with tuk-tuks for the last mile.

Good to know

Timing
December to March is the dry season on this coast. Outside it, expect afternoon downpours and rougher seas, though it rarely rains all day.
Swimming safety
Rip currents are common and lifeguards are rare outside the busiest beaches. Ask locally which end of the bay is safe on the day.
Getting around
Coastal trains are cheap and scenic but crowded; tuk-tuks handle short hops and metered ride apps work in Galle.
Etiquette
Cover shoulders and knees at temples, remove shoes and hats, and never pose with your back to a Buddha image.
Cash or card
Cards work in hotels and larger restaurants, but stalls, tuk-tuks and small guesthouses are cash. ATMs are plentiful in Galle and Matara.
