Skating on frozen Lake Louise
When Lake Louise freezes, staff clear a rink on the lake itself, and the result is regularly voted the world's most beautiful: emerald ice underfoot, the Victoria Glacier dead ahead, an ice castle for a centrepiece.

The experience
Once Lake Louise freezes hard, staff clear and flood a rink on the surface of the lake itself, directly beneath the Victoria Glacier. The setting does most of the work: green-blue ice underfoot, a wall of mountains at the far end and, in most years, a castle carved from ice as a centrepiece. Skill barely matters, since a good proportion of the people out there are shuffling rather than skating.
The season generally runs from late December to early spring, depending on ice and weather. Skating is free if you bring your own skates, with hire available at the hotel on the shore. The lake sits in Banff National Park, an hour or so from Banff town and roughly two hours from Calgary, so it fits into a winter trip built around skiing, hot springs and mountain driving.

From our guides
Skate hire is at the Fairmont on the shore, ability is irrelevant — shufflers welcome — and hot chocolate is administered rink-side. Mid-December to early April is the window, weather depending. Come at dusk, when the floodlights come on and the mountains turn blue.

-
The lake rink
Cleared on the frozen lake in front of the Victoria Glacier, floodlit in the evening and open to anyone with skates.
-
The ice castle
A carved ice structure built on the lake most winters, lit after dark and a fixture of the January ice sculpture festival.
-
Dusk on the ice
The hour when the floodlights come on and the mountains turn blue is the one to aim for. It also gets very cold.
-
Lake Louise ski area
One of Canada's largest ski resorts, minutes away, with a gondola that non-skiers can ride purely for the view.
-
Banff Upper Hot Springs
Outdoor mineral pools above Banff town, an hour away, and the obvious antidote to a day spent on the ice.
-
Moraine Lake road
Closed to vehicles in winter, it becomes a snowshoe and ski route into the Valley of the Ten Peaks.

Getting around
The rink is cleared on the lake directly in front of the Fairmont, a couple of minutes from the hotel car park, with skate hire on the shore. A shuttle links Lake Louise village up to the lake in winter.
Public transport: Coaches from Calgary and Banff run daily and local shuttles reach the lake, so a car is optional, if convenient in winter conditions.

Good to know
- Ice conditions
- The rink depends entirely on the freeze and can close after snowfall or a thaw. Check conditions the morning you go.
- Cold
- Temperatures well below minus 20°C are normal. Layer properly, cover your extremities and keep spare batteries warm inside a jacket.
- Parking
- The lakeside car park fills early and is often closed once full. A shuttle or bus from the village is the reliable option.
- Park pass
- Banff National Park requires a valid park pass for every vehicle, bought online in advance or at the gates.
- Skate hire
- Hire is available on the shore in limited sizes. Bringing your own guarantees a fit, and thick socks help more than expected.
