Why go
Seceda is a broad grassy shoulder above Val Gardena that ends abruptly in a row of tilted rock fins, the Odle, dropping away as though sliced. A cable car and gondola from Ortisei deliver you to around 2,500 metres, so the walking starts where the scenery does. The top is open pasture, cropped by cattle, laced with easy paths and dotted with mountain huts that serve lunch until late afternoon.
Half a day covers the ridge and the descent by lift; a full day allows a walk down the Val di Funes side or across to Col Raiser. Snow lingers into June, and lifts generally run from late spring to autumn, then again for the ski season. Cloud settles on the ridge often enough that you should build in a spare morning if the photograph matters to you.

From our guides
Seceda's ridge drops away in a wave of jagged teeth — the most photographed line in the Dolomites — and the path along the top is broad, grassy and mercifully flat. Wander as far as the Pieralongia rocks, picnic among belled cows, descend by lift. It's the biggest scenery-per-step return in the Alps.

Things to do
-
The ridge path
A broad, near-level track along the crest with the Odle pinnacles on one side and the Sella massif on the other. Suitable for most walkers.
-
Pieralongia rocks
Two isolated rock towers on the meadow beyond the ridge, about an hour from the top station, with huts nearby serving lunch.
-
Ortisei
The main valley town, with a pedestrianised centre and a long tradition of woodcarving that still fills its shop windows.
-
Col Raiser
A second lift system on the same plateau, useful for a one-way traverse that avoids retracing your steps back to the cable car.
-
Rifugio lunches
Huts scattered across the plateau serve canederli, barley soup and Kaiserschmarrn, reflecting the area's mixed Ladin and Austrian inheritance. Most open through the summer.
-
Val di Funes
The valley on the far side of the Odle, with the much-photographed churches at Santa Maddalena and Ranui below the same peaks.
Getting there
-
Fly to
Caselle (VRN)
Nearest airport to Dolomites, about 135km away as the crow flies.

Then
To Ortisei
Bolzano (BZO) has only a handful of flights, so most visitors arrive at Verona (VRN) or Innsbruck and drive, roughly two and a half hours to Ortisei in Val Gardena.

Getting around
The Seceda cable car leaves the middle of Ortisei in two stages and the ridge path starts at the top station; local buses link the Val Gardena villages for the walk back down.
Public transport: Buses run from Bolzano up the valley and around Val Gardena, and the summer guest card usually covers them.

Where to stay
Family run Tyrolean hotels with spas and half board, plus guesthouses, farm stays and apartments. Chains do not exist here, and most hotels close between the summer and winter seasons.
-
Best base overall
Ortisei
The valley's main town, with the Seceda cable car from the centre, a pedestrian street and plenty of hotels. It is the busiest of the three villages and priced accordingly.

Selva Val Gardena
At the head of the valley, surrounded by lifts and meadow paths, with family hotels and a bus that runs the valley all day. Quieter evenings than Ortisei.

Best value
Santa Cristina
Between the two, smaller and cheaper, with its own lifts and the valley bus at the door. Fewer restaurants, so you are eating at the hotel most nights.

Quietest
Castelrotto
Over the hill above the valley, a Tyrolean village of painted houses near the Alpe di Siusi meadows. A drive or bus from the Seceda lift, and lovely in the evening light.

Worth knowing before you book: The valley shuts for several weeks in spring and autumn, so check opening dates first. August and the ski weeks fill by winter, and half board with a week's stay is the usual arrangement.

Good to know
- Lift tickets
- A combined return covers the cable car and gondola. Check the last descent time and do not rely on walking down as a backup.
- Timing
- Mid-morning cloud is common in summer. First lifts give the clearest air, and late afternoon light is better for photographs.
- Pack this
- Wind at 2,500 metres bites even in August. Take a warm layer, a windproof and sun cream, since the paths offer no shade.
- Summer traffic
- Val Gardena's roads and car parks fill early in August. Buses run along the valley and are usually the simpler option.
- Footwear
- Paths are broad but stony and can hold snow into early summer. Trainers will do in dry weather, boots are better.
