Why go
Down at the far end of the Penwith peninsula, a valley opens onto a small beach of coarse white sand made largely of crushed shell, which is why the water reads turquoise on a bright day. Granite cliffs close it on both sides, and the Minack Theatre is cut into the rock immediately above. Add a Victorian telegraph station buried under the hill and you have a beach with an unusual amount going on.
It works as a day from anywhere in west Cornwall, though a night nearby lets you take in an evening performance at the Minack without a long dark drive. The coast path links Porthcurno to Logan Rock, Pedn Vounder and Land's End, so walkers can string several beaches together. Parking is limited and fills by mid-morning in August. The Atlantic here is cold year-round and the currents deserve respect.

From our guides
The open-air Minack Theatre is carved into the cliff directly above — book an evening performance and watch the sea change colour behind the stage. The water is bracing, obviously, but that's what makes the first plunge memorable.

Things to do
-
Minack Theatre
An open-air amphitheatre built into the cliff by Rowena Cade from the 1930s. Performances run through the season with the sea behind the stage, and it opens to visitors by day.
-
Pedn Vounder
The tidal sandbar beach around the headland, reached by a scramble down the cliff. Low tide reveals the sand, and it is a long-standing naturist spot.
-
Logan Rock
A balancing granite boulder on the headland above Treen, a short walk east along the coast path with views back over the bay.
-
The telegraph museum
This valley was the landfall for submarine cables to much of the world. The museum keeps the wartime tunnels and the working instruments.
-
The coast path to Land's End
A rugged, up-and-down stretch past Porthgwarra and Nanjizal, roughly three hours one way and considerably better than the car park at the end.
-
Porthcurno at low tide
The beach roughly doubles as the water drops, opening the sand towards Pedn Vounder. Check the tide table before committing to a day.

Good to know
- Parking
- There is one car park at the top of the valley and it fills early in summer. The lanes in are single track with passing places.
- Safety
- Lifeguards cover the main season only, and rips form near the rocks. Swim between the flags while they are up.
- Book ahead
- Minack performances sell out well in advance, and seating is stone terracing, so bring a cushion and waterproofs.
- Timing
- May, June and September give the best light and manageable crowds. The sea is warmest in late summer, which is still cold.
- Pack this
- A wetsuit if you plan to be in the water for long, plus layers. Wind on the cliff can be strong even on hot days.
