Why go

An inland beach sounds like a contradiction, but this is one: a small sinkhole in a meadow about a hundred metres from the Cantabrian coast, connected to the sea by underground channels that fill it with tidal water. The sand is real, the waves are miniature versions of the ones breaking on the cliffs outside, and cows graze the field above it. It is very small, and it empties with the tide.

Reaching it means parking near the hamlet of Naves and walking ten or fifteen minutes across fields, and it is worth timing the visit for high water, when there is actually something to swim in. This is a stop rather than a destination. Combine it with Llanes, a working fishing town ten minutes away, and the string of proper beaches strung along that stretch of the Asturian coast.

Odd, tiny, quietly remarkable

From our guides

It's tiny — barely forty metres — and only really swimmable around high tide, but there's nowhere else quite like it. Walk in across the fields from Naves and combine it with the surf town of Llanes for lunch.

Things to do

  1. The sinkhole itself

A protected natural monument formed where a cave roof collapsed, filled through tunnels from the sea and ringed on all sides by grass and rock.

  2. Timing with the tide

At low water the pool largely drains to wet sand. High tide is when it becomes a swimmable beach, so check tables before walking in.

  3. The walk from Naves

A fifteen-minute path across farmland from the car park, flat and easy but with no shade, no facilities and cattle in the fields.

  4. Llanes

A fishing town nearby with a harbour, a small old quarter and the painted concrete blocks of the Cubos de la Memoria along the breakwater.

  5. Playa de Torimbia

A large sandy crescent reached by a steep path a short drive west, one of the finest beaches on this coast and a good pairing for the day.

  6. Bufones de Pria

Blowholes in the clifftop limestone nearby that send spray high into the air when the swell is big, reached from the coastal path.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Ranón (OVD)

Nearest airport to Playa de Gulpiyuri, about 94km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Llanes

Around an hour and a half by car west from Santander (SDR) to Llanes on the A8; Asturias airport (OVD) is a similar drive from the other direction.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

Park at Naves and walk fifteen to twenty minutes across the fields to the sinkhole; time it for high tide, when there is actually water in the beach.

Public transport: Trains and buses reach Llanes easily, but the last stretch to Gulpiyuri is on foot from a rural lane with no service.

Where to stay

Casas rurales in converted farmhouses, small town hotels and apartments, plus coastal campsites. Chains are rare and many rural places take bookings by the week in summer.

  • Best base overall

    Llanes

The surf and fishing town ten minutes east, with hotels, restaurants and its own beaches. It is the practical choice, though it fills with Spanish families through August.

  • Quietest

    Naves and Villahormes

The hamlets you walk in from, with a few casas rurales among the fields and the sound of the sea through the ground. Nothing but a bar or two, so bring supplies.

  • Best with children

    Ribadesella

Twenty minutes west, with a long town beach, the estuary and the Tito Bustillo cave. More to do on a rainy day, which northern Spain will supply.

  • Best value

    Posada de Llanes

An inland village near the motorway with cheaper hotels and apartments than the coast. Five minutes from several beaches by car, and no sea view at all.

Worth knowing before you book: Gulpiyuri only fills at high tide, so check tables before planning the day. August in Asturias is fully booked well ahead and roadside parking near Naves is limited and enforced.

Good to know

Timing
Go around high tide. Outside those hours the beach is mostly damp sand and considerably less impressive than the photographs.
Getting there
Park in the designated area near Naves, off the coast road between Llanes and Ribadesella, then walk. Cars cannot get any closer.
Facilities
There are none at all, and no shade. Bring water, and take everything away with you when you leave.
Crowds
Space is very limited and August afternoons can be shoulder to shoulder. Early morning or an out-of-season weekday is far better.
Etiquette
The path crosses working farmland and the site is protected. Close gates, keep to the path and do not climb on the surrounding rock.
