Why go

Umbrella pines lean over pink granite boulders, and between them runs a long arc of pale sand shelving into water that turns from clear to deep blue. This is the south-eastern corner of Corsica, a few kilometres below Porto-Vecchio, and the shallows stay warm well into autumn. Three linked stretches make up the beach, so there is usually space to walk to when the middle section fills up.

Porto-Vecchio is the base, with Santa Giulia and Rondinara bays nearby and the Bavella mountains an hour inland for a complete change of scene. Flights and ferries arrive at Figari, Bastia or the town itself. June and September give warm water without the August rush, when the access road and car parks fill by mid-morning. Natural shade is limited beyond the pines, so arrive early for a good spot.

From our guides

It's family-friendly without being tame, with paddleboards for hire and a couple of excellent beach restaurants. June and September are the sweet spots, when the light turns golden and the crowds thin out.

Things to do

  1. The pine fringe

Old umbrella pines grow right down to the sand, giving the shade and the silhouette that make this beach recognisable in photographs.

  2. Rondinara bay

A near-circular cove between two headlands twenty minutes south, shallow and sheltered, and often calmer than the main beach when the wind gets up.

  3. Santa Giulia

A wide, lagoon-like bay just to the north with very shallow warm water and watersports hire, which makes it popular with families.

  4. Porto-Vecchio old town

A walled upper town of narrow streets, cafes and a citadel above the marina, where most people end up eating in the evening.

  5. Aiguilles de Bavella

Granite spires an hour inland with marked walks, cold river pools and a mountain pass road that repays the drive.

  6. Paddleboarding the shallows

Flat, clear water off the beach suits stand-up paddleboards, with granite outcrops and small coves to explore along the shoreline.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Figari (FSC)

Around half an hour by car from Figari airport (FSC) to Porto-Vecchio, then a further twenty minutes south-east to the beach.

  3. On the ground

Public transport: A summer shuttle bus runs from Porto-Vecchio to the beaches, but it is seasonal and infrequent.

Where to stay

Villas and self-catering residences, small pine-shaded hotels and some of Europe's better campsites. Chains are absent and prices in August are unapologetically high.

  • Best base overall

    Porto-Vecchio

The town above the gulf, fifteen minutes from the beach, with restaurants, a market and the widest choice of rooms. Parking in the old town is a headache in August.

  • Best for couples

    Palombaggia and Santa Giulia

Hotels and villas set back among the pines behind the two famous bays, with morning swims before anyone arrives. You need a car, and there is little to do after dinner.

  • Best with children

    Pinarello and Sainte-Lucie

North of town, with a gentle sandy bay, family campsites and residences with pools. Calmer and cheaper than Palombaggia, and the beach shelves slowly for small swimmers.

  • Best value

    L'Ospedale

Up in the cork oaks twenty minutes inland, where guesthouses cost less and nights are cool. Wonderful walking country, but every beach day starts with a winding drive down.

Worth knowing before you book: Corsica books early because ferry and flight capacity is limited. Reserve July and August accommodation and vehicle space by winter, and expect a Saturday-to-Saturday rule on villas.

Good to know

Getting there
Figari airport is around half an hour away and Bastia a longer drive. Ferries from mainland France and Italy dock at Bastia, Ajaccio and Porto-Vecchio.
Parking
The car parks behind the beach are paid and fill by mid-morning in July and August. Arriving before ten makes the whole day easier.
Timing
June and September have warm sea and manageable crowds. Many beach businesses close between October and April.
Pack this
Shade is limited beyond the pines, so bring an umbrella, plus water shoes for the granite at either end of the sand.
Driving
Corsican roads are narrow and slow, and journey times run much longer than the distances suggest. Allow roughly twice what a map estimates.
