Lanikai Beach

On Oahu's windward side, Lanikai — 'heavenly sea' in Hawaiian — lives up to the billing: half a mile of soft sand facing two pyramid-shaped islets, with water made for morning kayaking.

Why go

A short crescent of fine sand on Oahu's windward coast, backed by houses rather than hotels and looking out at the Mokulua islets. The reef offshore keeps the water flat, which is why kayaks and paddleboards outnumber surfboards here. There are no lifeguards, no toilets and no shops on the sand at all. Neighbouring Kailua provides everything else, ten minutes away by bike or car.

Almost everyone visits from a base in Waikiki or Kailua rather than staying here, and the drive over the Pali from Honolulu takes around half an hour. Mornings are calmer, brighter and easier for parking, which is limited to residential streets with strictly enforced rules. Trade winds build through the afternoon. Anyone wanting facilities, food or shade should head to Kailua Beach Park just along the coast.

The vibe
Calm, residential, quietly perfect

From our guides

It sits in a residential neighbourhood with no facilities, so it never feels like a resort. Hike the Lanikai Pillbox trail at dawn for the view, then spend the rest of the day recovering on the sand.

Things to do

  1. Ka'iwa Ridge pillboxes

A short, steep dirt trail climbs to two wartime observation posts, with the whole bay and the islets laid out below.

  2. Kayaking to the Mokulua islands

Flat, protected water makes the paddle out straightforward. Landing is permitted on one islet only, and it is a seabird sanctuary.

  3. Kailua Beach Park

The longer beach next door has lifeguards, showers, shade trees and parking, plus better swimming when the wind is up.

  4. Sunrise over the islets

The beach faces roughly east, so first light comes up between the two Mokulua. It is the reason for the early crowd.

  5. Kailua town

A low-rise town of coffee counters, poke shops and board hire, and the practical base for the windward side of the island.

  6. Nu'uanu Pali Lookout

On the drive back to Honolulu, a cliff-edge viewpoint over the windward coast with wind strong enough to lean on.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Honolulu, Oahu (HNL)

Nearest airport to Oahu, about 23km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Kailua

About forty-five minutes by car from Honolulu (HNL), crossing to the windward side by the Pali or Likelike highway. Shuttles and ride-hailing both serve the route.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

Lanikai is a short walk or cycle beyond Kailua town, reached by narrow public access paths between the houses. There is no car park and street parking is restricted, so most people walk or cycle the last stretch.

Public transport: City buses run from Honolulu to Kailua, but the final approach is on foot, and the parking rules make a bicycle the smarter option.

Where to stay

Vacation rentals, cottages and rooms in private homes on the windward side, where hotels barely exist. The resort hotels are all on the other coast at Waikiki and Ko Olina.

  • Best base overall

    Kailua

The windward town a mile from Lanikai, with a long beach of its own, supermarkets, coffee shops and kayak hire. Hotels are scarce, so most people rent a house or a room.

Worth knowing before you book: Honolulu restricts short-term rentals tightly, so book only licensed listings. Lanikai has almost no parking and residents police it; go early or arrive by bike from Kailua.

Good to know

Parking
There is no car park. Roadside space in the residential streets is limited and enforced, so arrive early or come by bike.
Facilities
No lifeguards, toilets or shops at the beach itself. Bring water, and use the facilities at Kailua Beach Park.
Etiquette
This is a residential neighbourhood. Keep noise down, never block driveways and take everything away with you.
Timing
Mornings are calm and clear. Trade winds build in the afternoon and can make sitting on the sand uncomfortable.
Reef safety
Reef-safe sun cream is required by law in Hawaii, and shallow coral means care is needed if you swim out.
