Kynance Cove
On the Lizard peninsula, Kynance is the Cornwall of paintings: serpentine rock stacks, white sand revealed at low tide and sea that flashes genuinely turquoise on a sunny day.

Why go
On the western side of the Lizard, the most southerly point in Britain, a cove of serpentine stacks and islands with sand that only appears as the tide drops. The rock is dark green and red, polished by the sea, and the water over pale sand turns a colour Cornwall is not supposed to manage. Above the cove, the coast path runs through heath and wild flowers along the cliff.
This is a half-day rather than a holiday. Park at the National Trust car park, walk ten steep minutes down and time the whole thing around low water. The Lizard village, Mullion Cove and the coast path south are all close, and Helston and Falmouth are within half an hour. Summer weekends fill the car park by mid-morning, and the descent is hard on unsteady legs.

From our guides
The walk down from the National Trust car park takes ten steep minutes. Time your visit for a falling tide — the beach all but disappears at high water — and reward yourself at the tucked-away café.

Things to do
-
The tidal sand
At low water the beach opens up between the stacks. Check the tide times, because the sand disappears completely at high water.
-
Asparagus Island
Reachable across the sand on a low tide, with a blowhole that roars on a big swell. Do not get caught out by the rising water.
-
Serpentine rock
The dark green stone here is polished and sold locally, and the cliffs are why the Lizard's geology is studied worldwide.
-
Coast path to Lizard Point
An hour or so south along the cliffs brings you to the mainland's most southerly point, with choughs overhead and seals below.
-
Lizard wild flowers
The heath above the cove holds plants found almost nowhere else in Britain, at their best in late spring and early summer.
-
Mullion Cove
A small Victorian harbour a few miles north, worth the detour when the swell is up and the sea is hitting the wall.

Getting around
Park at the National Trust car park above the cove, then walk about ten steep minutes down to the sand. The Lizard village and the coast path offer longer approaches on foot.
Public transport: Buses reach Helston and the Lizard village, but nothing runs to the cove car park itself.

Where to stay
Bed and breakfasts, pub rooms, self-catering cottages and a lot of campsites and holiday parks. Hotels are few, and cottages usually go by the week in summer.
-
Best base overall
Helston
The market town at the top of the Lizard, with supermarkets, a spread of pubs and rooms, and a straightforward drive down to the cove. It is not a seaside town, which is the trade-off.

The Lizard village
The most southerly village in Britain, a short drive or a fine coast-path walk from Kynance, with a village green, cafes and the lighthouse. Choice of rooms is small, so book early.

Porthleven
A working harbour with the county's best cluster of restaurants and pubs around the water, twenty minutes from the cove. Parking is difficult and summer weekends are busy.

Mullion
A large village with a shop, campsites and Poldhu's sandy, lifeguarded beach nearby, plus easy access to the coast path. Mullion Cove itself is rocky rather than sandy.

Worth knowing before you book: Cornish cottages sell the following summer by autumn, with Saturday changeovers standard. The National Trust car park at Kynance fills by mid-morning and can flood at very high tides.

Good to know
- Timing
- Go on a falling tide. The beach is largely underwater at high tide, and the walk out to the island only works near low.
- Parking
- The National Trust car park is the only realistic option and fills early on fine summer days. Charges apply for non-members.
- The walk down
- Ten minutes of steep, uneven path each way, harder on the return. It is not suitable for wheels or unsteady legs.
- Swimming
- Currents around the stacks can be strong and there is no lifeguard outside the summer season. Stay close in and read the notices.
- Weather
- The Lizard is exposed and the weather turns quickly. Bring a windproof layer even on a warm day.
