Dutch Caribbean

Curaçao

Bonaire's flashier neighbour deserves equal billing for beginners: dozens of pocket-sized coves on the west coast — Playa Kenepa Grandi is the pin-up — drop onto healthy reef within a few fin-kicks of the sand.

Why go

Curaçao sits outside the Caribbean hurricane belt on a dry, cactus-studded landscape closer in feel to the Dutch Antilles than to a typical tropical island. Willemstad's Handelskade, a row of gabled townhouses in ice-cream colours reflected in the harbour, is the postcard image, but the wider island is quieter: salt pans, flamingos, and a national park of cliffs and hiking trails at Christoffel. Shete Boka shows off the wilder, wave-battered north coast.

A week here comfortably mixes beach and reef days with a couple of inland excursions and an evening or two in Willemstad's restaurants, many run by a genuinely international mix of chefs. It's an easy add-on to Bonaire or Aruba for anyone island-hopping the ABC trio. Weather barely changes through the year, which makes it a dependable winter-sun choice when other Caribbean islands sit inside the hurricane season.

From our guides

The Tugboat wreck at Caracas Bay sits in five metres of water, shallow enough for snorkellers to tour. Between swims there's Willemstad's pastel Dutch waterfront, a UNESCO site with proper restaurants. Below the hurricane belt, it's reliable year-round; hire a car to beach-hop.

    Willemstad (Pietermaai)

Restored pastel townhouses with restaurants, bars and small hotels, walkable to the floating bridge and Punda. Beaches need a car, and the district is still a work in progress in patches.
