Why go

Down near the Malaysian border sits a small island inside a marine national park, walkable end to end in twenty minutes. Three beaches do the work: Sunrise on the east, Sunset on the west and Pattaya facing south, joined by a sandy lane of bars and restaurants known as Walking Street. Water clarity is exceptional, reef begins in the shallows, and the whole place runs on generators and a slow rhythm.

Getting here is the price of admission, with speedboats from Pak Bara on the mainland or from Langkawi in Malaysia taking two to three hours depending on the sea. The season runs November to April, and much of the island shuts down for the monsoon. Three or four nights is about right, with a day island-hopping among the Adang and Rawi group.

From our guides

Snorkel trips putter between untouched islets where you'll often have the reef to yourselves. Go November to April; much of the island naps through the monsoon.

Things to do

  1. Sunrise Beach

The longest and quietest of the three, facing Koh Adang, with good snorkelling off the northern end and flat water first thing in the morning.

  2. Sunset Beach

Small, rocky at the edges and where everyone gathers at the end of the day. A short walk over the hill from Walking Street.

  3. Pattaya Beach

The main arrival beach, with the widest sand, most of the restaurants and longtails lined up ready for island trips.

  4. Snorkelling the Adang group

Longtail trips loop between Koh Adang, Koh Rawi and the outlying rocks, with coral gardens and, in season, very little company.

  5. Koh Adang viewpoint

A steep climb through forest on the island opposite, with Lipe laid out below and national park water all around it.

  6. Walking Street

The sandy lane across the island lights up in the evening with grills, bars and the day's fish laid out on ice.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Hat Yai (HDY)

Nearest airport to Koh Lipe, about 130km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Koh Lipe

From Langkawi (LGK) a seasonal international ferry crosses to Koh Lipe in around an hour and a half. From the Thai side, fly to Hat Yai or Trang and continue by road to Pak Bara pier, then take a speedboat.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

Boats moor offshore and longtails shuttle passengers to the sand. The island is walkable end to end in half an hour along Walking Street; longtail boats serve the beaches and snorkelling islets.

Public transport: None, and none needed. There are no cars on the island, only motorbike sidecar taxis and boats.
