Why go

Comporta is a string of small villages between the Sado estuary and twelve unbroken kilometres of Atlantic sand, backed by rice paddies and umbrella pines. Building is tightly restricted, so there are no high-rises and no crowds — just beaches, long lunches and beautiful places to stay.

From our guides

An hour south of Lisbon, Comporta hides behind rice paddies and umbrella pines: miles of empty Atlantic sand, a handful of barefoot-chic restaurants and firm local resistance to big hotels. It's fashionable now, but quietly so. Rent a house among the dunes, cycle to Praia do Pego for grilled fish, and let the days blur into one another. The water is fresh rather than warm — the naps are world-class.

  1. Horse riding on the beach

Dawn and golden-hour rides along the surf line — the most Comporta thing you can do.

  2. Lunch at a beach restaurant

Clams, tiger prawns and cold wine in the dunes.

  3. Cycle through rice fields

Flat, sandy trails — emerald paddies in June, gold by September.

  4. Sunset at Praia do Pego

The sun drops straight into the Atlantic; stay until the light goes.

  5. Visit local markets

Morning stalls of peaches, cheese and whatever came off the boats.

  6. Day trip to Lisbon

The capital's hills, trams and pastéis are just over an hour away.

    Getting around

A car is needed for the beaches and restaurants, though bicycles cover the flat runs between the village, Praia do Pego and Carvalhal.

Public transport: Minimal: a handful of buses from Setubal and Alcacer do Sal, and nothing useful for beach hopping.

Taxis & transfers

Comporta has its own village taxi firm — always call ahead rather than hoping to flag one down, especially for early flights. A pre-booked private transfer from Lisbon Airport takes about 1h 15m and typically costs around €100–150 each way:

  • Táxis ComportaThe local firm, based on Rua das Comportas in the village — on call day and night for local runs and airport trips · +351 966 797 358
  • Welcome PickupsPrivate Lisbon Airport transfers — fixed price, driver meets you in arrivals
  • KiwiTaxiPre-booked transfers, from sedans up to eight-seat minivans

Uber & Bolt

Both apps work well in Lisbon and for the ride down, but drivers are scarce around Comporta itself — fine for arriving, not something to rely on locally. For the trip back, book the village taxi the day before.

Ferry via Tróia

Atlantic Ferries crosses the Sado estuary from Setúbal all day: the passenger catamaran leaves Rua Teotónio Banha for Tróia Marina (about 15 minutes, every half hour in summer), and the car ferry sails from Doca do Comércio to Tróia Cais Sul (about 25 minutes). Comporta is then a 20-minute drive down the peninsula. Buy tickets online, or at the terminal counters and machines in Setúbal:

Buses & public transport

Rede Expressos coaches link Lisbon's Sete Rios station with the Comporta area a few times a day — most run via Setúbal and Tróia and stop at Comporta Centro de Saúde (about 3 hours). Services are sparse, so check times before you rely on one:

Where to stay

Rented villas and dune houses dominate, plus a few small design hotels and guesthouses. Deliberately no high-rises, and the chains have never been let in.

  • Best base overall

    Comporta village

The original village by the rice fields, with the shops, the surf-shack restaurants and a short hop to the beach. Everything is spread out, so a car is not optional.

  • Best with children

    Carvalhal

Quieter dune housing near Praia do Pego, with gentler beach access and villas that come with pools. Little to walk to, and the Atlantic here is cold and can have a shore break.

    Find stays in Carvalhal
  • Quietest

    Melides

Twenty minutes south around a lagoon, with cork woods, empty sand and a slower crowd. The restaurant choice is thin, and you drive for anything beyond the essentials.

  • Best value

    Alcácer do Sal

A riverside town half an hour inland where rooms cost a fraction of the dune prices. You give up the walk to the beach in exchange for a real town and a castle.

Worth knowing before you book: August houses are taken a year ahead by returning Lisbon families, and most rentals want a week minimum in summer, changeover Saturday.

Good to know

Hire a car
There is no meaningful public transport and the beaches, villages and restaurants are all a few kilometres apart. Sand tracks mean gentle driving.
Sea conditions
This is open Atlantic with strong currents and a shore break. Swim near lifeguards in season and take the flags seriously; the water is cold year-round.
Book far ahead
Houses and the few places to eat are reserved months in advance for July and August, and many restaurants close entirely out of season.
Cash
Cards are widely accepted, but small beach kitchens and village shops sometimes are not set up for them. Keep some euros with you.
Getting there
About an hour from Lisbon over the Vasco da Gama bridge, or via the Setúbal to Tróia car ferry, which is slower but far more pleasant.
