Arugam Bay

When the south-west coast goes flat and rainy, Sri Lanka's surf migrates east to Arugam Bay — a single sandy street of surf camps, rotti shacks and juice stands beside one of Asia's great right-hand point breaks.

Why go

One sandy street runs along Sri Lanka's east coast between surf camps, roti shacks and a lagoon, with a long right hand point break at the end of it. The season here is the mirror of the south, so the town is full from May to September and largely shut the rest of the year. Life runs on tide and heat: surf, sleep, eat, then surf again before dark.

A week or more suits it, because there is very little reason to hurry. Kumana and the eastern gate of Yala are close for safaris, and the lagoons hold crocodiles and birds. The road across from Colombo takes most of a day, so many people fly to Batticaloa and drive down. Anyone wanting comfort, coral or a wide range of things to do should look elsewhere.

From our guides

Main Point suits the confident; Whiskey Point and Peanut Farm, a tuk-tuk ride away, coach absolute beginners kindly. Elephants sometimes amble past the lagoon at dusk. The season runs May to September, the mirror image of Ahangama's.

Things to do

  1. Main Point

A long right hander peels along the headland at the southern end of the bay. It gets crowded and is best left to confident surfers.

  2. Whiskey Point and Peanut Farm

Two gentler breaks a tuk tuk ride north and south, where most beginners catch their first proper waves.

  3. Elephant Rock

A short drive and a walk lead to a quiet beach with a mellow wave and a rocky viewpoint over the coast behind it.

  4. Kumana National Park

The quieter eastern side of the Yala complex is strong on birds and lagoons, with elephants and the occasional leopard.

  5. Lagoon safaris

Boat trips into the lagoons behind the town find crocodiles, eagles and, at dusk, elephants coming down to drink.

  6. Roti and kottu

Godamba roti stuffed and folded, and kottu chopped on a hot plate to a rhythm you hear before you smell it, are the staple meals here.

  • Best base overall

    Arugam Bay village

The single sandy street of surf camps, cafés and rotti shacks, with Main Point at the southern end. Everything is walkable, and it is also the noisiest strip in season.

  • Best for couples

    Ulla and the south end

Past the point, where a few quieter beachfront places sit among the palms. Peaceful and still walkable to dinner, though the swimming is better back in the bay.

    Pottuvil

The town a couple of kilometres north, with cheap guesthouses, the bus stand and local prices. No beach scene at all, and a tuk-tuk each way.

  • Quietest

    Panama and Peanut Farm side

South towards the lagoon, with a scatter of simple cabanas near the beginner breaks. Very little infrastructure, and elephants genuinely do cross the road.
