Ten beach party destinations that go from sunset to sunrise

There is a specific magic to dancing outdoors with the sea within sprinting distance — sunset as the warm-up act, sunrise as the encore, and a swim as the world's best comedown. These ten destinations have refined the formula, from Ibiza's superclubs to Koh Phangan's moonlit mayhem. Go with the right expectations: earplugs, sun cream, water between drinks and absolutely nothing planned for the following morning.

Still the world championship. Ibiza's ecosystem runs from Café Mambo's sunset strip through beach clubs to superclubs — Ushuaïa's open-air pool parties, Hï's laser cathedral — where the planet's biggest DJs hold summer residencies. It costs a fortune; budget accordingly and balance the damage with north-coast coves and hippy-market days. First-timers: June or September, never August.

Paradise and Super Paradise beaches wrote the blueprint — daytime sessions that escalate from champagne lunch to full dance floor by golden hour. Mykonos is glossy, expensive and completely aware of it, but the setting is unarguable: Aegean blue, whitewashed cubes, DJs as headline acts. Scandi-style beach club Scorpios does the bohemian-luxe sunset better than anywhere on earth.

A pebble bay on a moonscape island that becomes Croatia's Ibiza each summer: three big open-air clubs — Papaya, Aquarius, Noa — stacked along one beach, running pool parties by day and festivals by night. Book accommodation far ahead of full moon, and guard your flip-flops with your life.

Two flavours, one coastline: Cancún's hotel-zone mega-clubs deliver the full spring-break spectacle, while Tulum down the road counters with jungle-chic beach clubs, tulle canopies and sunrise sets between the palms — Zamna and Day Zero festivals draw the global techno circuit each January. Cenote swims cure what the mezcal caused. Dry season, November to April, is the window.

The original. Goa's trance heritage lives on in the cliffside bars and beach shacks of Anjuna and Vagator, where sunset sessions roll into open-air nights under strings of lights, and Wednesday's flea market keeps the old freak-scene DNA alive. It's looser, cheaper and warmer-hearted than any European equivalent. Season runs November to March; sunset at Curlies remains a pilgrimage.

Bali's party gravity has slid down the coast from Kuta's buckets to Canggu's beach bars, where Batu Bolong rolls from surf lessons into sunset DJ sets on the sand, and the clifftop bars of Uluwatu stage the island's most cinematic golden hour above the break. Rio treats the beach as a 24-hour living room. Sunset at Arpoador rock earns an actual round of applause from the crowd, then the energy flows to Copacabana's kiosks, the botecos of Ipanema and Leblon, and finally the samba pouring out of Lapa's arches until dawn. Order a caipirinha where the locals queue, keep valuables minimal after dark, and if you can swing New Year's Eve — Réveillon — two million people in white own Copacabana.

The Mediterranean's most unapologetic party machine: Nissi Beach runs foam parties and open-air raves through the afternoon, the Square's clubs take over after midnight, and the sea — genuinely some of Europe's clearest — handles the recovery swims. July and August are gloriously feral; June and September serve the same turquoise water with room to dance. Start at Nissi Bay's beach bars around 4pm, nap early evening like a professional, then hit the strip at one.

White Beach performs the gentlest handover in the business: paraw sailboats crossing a tangerine sunset, then fire dancers, then a four-kilometre string of barefoot bars serving rum from coconuts on the sand. The island's famous 2018 clean-up left it greener and saner — parties now end at the bar line rather than in the sea, which everyone agrees is progress. Station 2 is the epicentre; arrive for happy hour around 5pm and order a calamansi mojito.
