Whale sharks
Snorkelling beside a whale shark recalibrates the word 'big' — a spotted, unbothered bus of a fish filtering plankton while you kick frantically to keep pace.

The experience
Sightings begin from an outrigger, with a spotter standing at the bow reading the water for a shadow. When one is found you slide in, swim hard, and for perhaps thirty seconds share the sea with an animal the length of a bus. The whole thing is regulated: small groups, snorkel only, no feeding, no touching, a set distance kept. Some mornings deliver several encounters, some deliver none.
Donsol is a working coastal town in Bicol rather than a resort, so expect simple lodgings and early starts. Boats leave soon after breakfast, when the water is flat and the plankton is near the surface. Build two or three mornings in to improve your odds, then fill the afternoons with the firefly river, the volcano an hour up the road, or diving out at Ticao. February to May is the reliable window.

From our guides
Donsol runs its interactions the defensible way: no feeding, no touching, snorkel only, with trained spotters guiding small groups from outrigger boats. That makes sightings wild and unguaranteed, which is rather the point. February to May is peak season. Skip any operator, anywhere, that baits sharks to order.

Make a trip of it
-
Snorkelling with butanding
The local name for whale sharks, and the reason for the trip. Interactions are wild and unbaited, briefed at the visitor centre and led by trained spotters.
-
Firefly cruise on the Ogod
Paddle out after dark and watch mangrove trees pulse with thousands of synchronised fireflies. A quiet, strange counterpoint to the morning's exertion.
-
Manta rays off Ticao
Boats run out to the channel between Ticao and Burias, where strong currents draw mantas onto cleaning stations. Serious diving, and best for the experienced.
-
Mayon volcano
The near perfect cone rises behind Legazpi, an hour or so east. Clear mornings are the ones to chase, since cloud usually swallows the summit by lunchtime.
-
Bicol cooking
This is the chilli and coconut milk corner of the Philippines. Try laing, made with taro leaves, and the pork stew known as Bicol express.

Getting around
Interactions are registered at the Donsol visitor centre on the shore and run from outrigger boats. The town itself is small and tricycles cover it.
Public transport: Basic but workable: vans and jeepneys run between Legazpi and Donsol, and tricycles handle the last mile.

Small beach resorts with fan or air-conditioned cottages, family-run inns in town, and conventional hotels only once you reach Legazpi. Nothing luxurious anywhere near the pier.

Good to know
- Timing
- The season runs roughly from late November to June, with February to May the most reliable. Outside those months boats may not run at all.
- Getting there
- Fly into Legazpi from Manila, then take a road transfer of about an hour and a half. Domestic flights here are weather sensitive, so leave slack.
- The rules
- Snorkel only, no scuba, no flash, no touching and a minimum distance from the animal. Registration and a briefing at the visitor centre are compulsory.
- Fitness
- You will be entering the water repeatedly and swimming hard in open sea. Bring your own mask if you can, and use fins.
- No guarantees
- These are wild animals in open water and blank days happen. Anyone treating a single trip as a certainty will be disappointed, so allow more than one.
