The experience
A via ferrata is a protected climbing route: steel cable bolted to the rock, with ladders, rungs and pegs where the holds run out. You wear a harness and a lanyard with two carabiners, clipping past each anchor so you are never unattached. Many Dolomite routes were cut by soldiers during the First World War, and some still run through tunnels and gun positions.
Build a week around Cortina, Arabba or the Val Gardena and mix ferrate with ordinary walking and nights in mountain huts, since few people want that much exposure every day. The season runs July to September, once snow has cleared the ledges. Hire a guide for the first outing and start on a grade one route. Anyone with a real fear of heights should not begin here.

From our guides
Clipped in with a lanyard kit at every step, you traverse ledges with several hundred metres of air below your heels. Start on a grade-one route near Cortina, and hire a mountain guide for your first day out. July to September is the season; helmets always.

Make a trip of it
-
Lagazuoi tunnels
Wartime galleries drilled through the mountain above the Falzarego pass, descended with a torch and helmet, with a cable car to save the climb up.
-
Tre Cime di Lavaredo
The three towers are circled by an easy walking path, with short protected sections and old front-line positions dotted around the loop.
-
Sass Rigais
A classic full-day route above the Val Gardena to a summit above 3,000 metres, with a long approach and a different protected line down.
-
Nights in the rifugi
Mountain huts let you start high and early, and the two-course dinner with a jug of red is half the reason people keep coming back.
-
Kit hire
Lanyard sets, harnesses and helmets are rented in the valley towns. Check that the lanyard is a current energy-absorbing model before you leave the shop.

Getting around
Routes start from valley car parks and lift stations around Cortina, and guides normally collect you from town. Cable cars remove much of the approach climb.
Public transport: Summer Dolomiti buses link the valleys and passes, but the timings rarely suit the early start a ferrata wants.

Where to base yourself
Family-run alpine hotels with half board, garni bed and breakfasts, and mountain refuges at the top of many routes. Apartments are common but book out for August.
-
Best base overall
Cortina d'Ampezzo
The densest cluster of guiding offices and kit hire in the range, with grade-one routes such as the Lagazuoi tunnels a short drive away. It is the priciest town in the Dolomites.

Arabba
High on the Pordoi road, in easy reach of the Marmolada and Sella routes, with lifts that cut the approach walks. A small village with limited dining.

Corvara
Alta Badia's main village, with gentle family ferrate nearby, summer lift passes and plenty to do on rest days. Well organised rather than atmospheric.

Worth knowing before you book: Hire kit locally rather than flying with it, and book a guide for the first day weeks ahead in July and August. Lift-linked routes depend on cable car opening dates.

Good to know
- Guides
- A qualified alpine guide for the first day teaches clipping, pacing and when to turn round, which is essentially the whole skill.
- Grading
- Routes run from easy to extremely difficult, and the gap between grades is larger than the numbers suggest. Start well below what you think you can manage.
- Weather
- Steel cable and afternoon lightning are a poor combination. Start at dawn and be off the exposed ground by early afternoon.
- Pack this
- Helmet, gloves, stiff boots, a small pack that does not swing about, and more water than an ordinary walk needs.
- Book ahead
- Huts and cable cars fill through August. Reserve refuge beds in spring and check lift opening dates at either end of the season.
