Utrecht and the Veluwe

Why go
Two very different Dutch landscapes sit half an hour apart by train. Utrecht is a compact university city built around canals with wharf cellars at water level, a cathedral tower you can climb and a student population that keeps it lively. East of it, the Veluwe is the country's largest stretch of forest, heath and drifting sand, with red deer, wild boar and a national park at its centre.
Cycling is the point, and the numbered junction network makes routes easy to improvise. Allow two nights in the city and two near the Veluwe, or simply day-trip out. Late August and early September bring purple heather, while spring is quieter and greener. Rain and wind are the real variables. It is flat throughout, which makes it manageable for most families.

From our guides
Base in Utrecht for canal-side pedalling, then take the train to the Veluwe, a surprising expanse of forest and heather where white bikes are free to borrow inside Hoge Veluwe park, with the Kröller-Müller's Van Goghs at its centre. Flat is guaranteed; headwind is the national mountain. August turns the heather purple.

Things to do
-
Utrecht's wharf cellars
The Oudegracht runs a level below the street, with old warehouse cellars turned into terraces along the water, an arrangement unique among Dutch canals.
-
Dom Tower
The tallest church tower in the Netherlands is climbed by guided tour, and has stood apart from its cathedral since a storm flattened the nave.
-
Hoge Veluwe National Park
Free white bicycles are left at the gates for visitors to ride the sand and forest tracks between heathland and drift dunes.
-
Kroller-Muller Museum
Inside the park sits a major Van Gogh collection and a large sculpture garden in the woods behind it, reached on those same white bicycles.
-
Knooppunten routes
The national junction network lets you plan a ride as a list of numbers, with signposts at every junction and no map reading required at all.
-
Deer at dusk
Red deer and wild boar are watched from hides and quiet forest roads across the Veluwe, with the autumn rut the noisiest time to be out.

Getting around
Utrecht is compact and best seen by bike. Frequent trains run east to Ede-Wageningen or Apeldoorn for the Veluwe, where free white bikes circulate inside Hoge Veluwe park.
Public transport: Excellent. Dutch trains and buses reach the city and the park entrances, and bicycles cover everything in between.

Utrecht city centre
Canal wharves, a compact medieval core and the country's busiest rail hub, so the Veluwe is a short train ride. Central rooms are limited and priced accordingly.

Worth knowing before you book: Hoge Veluwe charges separate park and museum entry and the car parks fill on summer weekends. Book trains cheaply on the day, but reserve heather-season rooms in August ahead.

Good to know
- Bike hire
- Rental is available at stations and shops everywhere. Take a lock and use it, as bicycle theft is close to a national sport.
- Trains
- You need a chip card or contactless bank card to tap in and out, and taking a bicycle on board needs an extra ticket outside peak hours.
- Cash or card
- Many Dutch places are card only, and a few accept only local debit systems. Carry a card that works and a little cash as backup.
- Timing
- The heather colours in August. Park entry to the Hoge Veluwe is paid separately from the museum, and both are busiest at weekends.
- Weather
- There is no shelter on the heath and the wind is constant. A light waterproof is worth carrying even on a clear morning.
