Triglav
Every Slovene is supposed to climb Triglav once, and joining them is a two-day rite: hike to a mountain hut through the limestone theatre of the Julian Alps, then finish along a cabled via ferrata ridge to the 2,864-metre summit.

Why go
Slovenia's highest peak sits at the centre of the country's only national park, a limestone massif of pale walls, glacial valleys and cold turquoise rivers. The north face above the Vrata valley is one of the largest rock faces in the Alps. Days here are spent walking between mountain huts, through meadows and karst scree, with marmots whistling and the Sava rising clear from its spring.
Most people build a trip around two or three days on the mountain and a soft landing afterwards at Lake Bohinj or Bled, both under an hour away. The walking season runs roughly July to September, when huts are staffed and the snowfields have gone. Outside it the route becomes a mountaineering proposition. Anyone uneasy with heights or exposure should enjoy the valleys instead.

From our guides
Hire a licensed local guide for the harnessed section unless you have real scrambling experience — it is exposed. July to September is the season. At the top, tradition demands a ceremonial birching. Consent optional.

Things to do
-
Vrata valley and the north face
The classic approach walk runs up a green glacial valley to the foot of a wall over a kilometre high, with the Pericnik waterfall on the way in.
-
Valley of the Seven Lakes
A high plateau of linked glacial tarns above Bohinj, walkable as a long day or a hut-to-hut leg, with larch woods and limestone pavement between the water.
-
Lake Bohinj
The larger, quieter lake at the park's southern edge, good for cold swims, a lakeside path and the cable car up Vogel for a full view of the massif.
-
Kredarica hut
The highest staffed refuge in Slovenia sits just below the summit ridge and is where most climbers spend the night before an early start.
-
Vintgar Gorge
Wooden walkways pinned to the rock carry you above the green Radovna river for well over a kilometre, close to Bled and easy on tired legs.
-
The Soca valley
Over the Vrsic pass, the river runs an improbable turquoise through gorges, with rafting, First World War history and Kobarid's food scene as the reward.

Good to know
- Timing
- July to September is the practical window. Earlier there is snow on the ridges, later the huts start closing for the winter.
- Book ahead
- Mountain huts fill on summer weekends and take reservations well in advance. Carry cash for hut meals and extras.
- Pack this
- A via ferrata set with helmet and harness is effectively compulsory for the summit ridge, and can be hired in Bled or Kranjska Gora.
- Guides
- Licensed Slovenian mountain guides run two-day ascents and are worth the money if you have never scrambled on a lanyard before.
- Weather
- Afternoon thunderstorms are common in high summer, which is why parties leave the huts before dawn. Check the mountain forecast, not the valley one.
