The Loire Valley
The Loire à Vélo route strings 900 signposted kilometres past the greatest hits of French château-building — Chambord's roofline alone justifies the ferry crossing — but the smart move is a gentle four-day sampler between Blois and Chinon.

Why go
France's longest river runs west through a wide, level valley of sandbanks, willows and pale tufa cliffs, with the greatest concentration of Renaissance chateaux in the country strung along it and its tributaries. The valley floor is nearly flat, which is why the Loire a Velo route works so well: 900 signposted kilometres of quiet lanes and riverside paths. Vineyards, cave cellars and market towns fill the space between castles.
Four or five days between Blois and Chinon makes a good sampler, riding thirty to fifty kilometres a day. June and September avoid the worst of the heat and the school holidays. Trains along the valley carry bikes, so any stage can be skipped. The chateaux are the draw, but two or three seen properly beats a forced march through six.

From our guides
The valley floor is mercifully level, and every village supplies goat's cheese and a serviceable Sancerre. June and September dodge both crowds and heat. Trains carry bikes free, so you can bail or leapfrog a stage at will.

Things to do
-
Chambord
Francois I's hunting lodge on a monumental scale, with a double-helix staircase and a roofline of chimneys and turrets set in a walled estate.
-
Chenonceau
A chateau built across the river Cher on a series of arches, with formal gardens on both banks and a long gallery over the water.
-
The Loire a Velo
A signposted route of about 900 kilometres from the Auvergne to the Atlantic, mostly flat and largely on quiet lanes and greenways.
-
Chinon and Fontevraud
A fortress above the Vienne, and nearby one of Europe's largest abbey complexes, where Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry II are buried.
-
Troglodyte villages
Soft tufa cliffs around Saumur hold cave dwellings, mushroom farms and sparkling wine cellars cut directly into the rock.
-
Goat's cheese and Loire wine
Crottin de Chavignol and other goat's cheeses pair with Sancerre, Vouvray and Chinon. Most villages sell both without ceremony.

Blois
On the river and the Paris train line, midway between Chambord and Amboise, with the Loire a Velo path through town. The chateau town itself is workaday away from the centre.
