The GoldenEye bungee

James Bond opened GoldenEye by diving off the Verzasca Dam, and civilians have been queueing to copy him ever since: 220 metres of freefall down a curved concrete face into a Ticino valley of emerald pools.

The GoldenEye bungee, Verzasca Dam, Switzerland

Happens around Verzasca Dam, Switzerland — nearest airport Ferno (MXP), about 64km away.

The experience

The Verzasca Dam curves 220 metres above a Ticino valley, and the jump goes straight down its concrete face into the gorge below. It is the fall from the opening of GoldenEye, and it remains one of the highest commercial bungee jumps anywhere, with something over seven seconds of freefall. The walk out to the platform along the dam crest does most of the psychological work.

The jump takes a morning, so build a couple of days around it in the Verzasca valley or on Lake Maggiore. The season runs roughly from spring to autumn and slots book out, particularly at weekends. Locarno and Ascona are twenty minutes away for a softer evening. Anyone with a heart condition, a recent injury or back trouble should check the operator's restrictions first.

The vibe
Vertiginous, concrete, briefly heroic

From our guides

It is Europe's highest commercial bungee, and the seven-and-a-half-second fall leaves ample time for regret and its opposite. Jumps run roughly April to October and slots sell out, so book ahead. Recover afterwards in the absurdly clear Verzasca river downstream.

Make a trip of it

  1. The dam crest walk

The approach across the top of the dam, with the valley dropping away on one side and the reservoir on the other, is part of the experience.

  2. Lavertezzo's double-arched bridge

A stone bridge over the Verzasca a short way up the valley, with water so clear the riverbed is visible several metres down.

  3. Swimming the Verzasca

Smooth granite slabs and green pools line the river below the dam. The water is snow-fed and very cold even in August.

  4. Corippo and the stone villages

Tiny hamlets of dry-stone houses under slate roofs cling to the valley sides, several of them protected as national monuments.

  5. Locarno and Lake Maggiore

Twenty minutes away, a lakeside town with palm trees, a hilltop sanctuary reached by funicular and a distinctly Mediterranean climate.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Ferno (MXP)

Nearest airport to Verzasca Dam, about 64km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Locarno

Lugano (LUG) is about 45 minutes by car to Locarno, though it is a very small airport; Milan Malpensa is the usual arrival point at roughly an hour and a half to two hours. Trains from Zurich to Locarno take around three hours.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

The dam sits about 20 to 30 minutes up the Verzasca valley from Locarno by car, or by postbus from Locarno station. Jump slots run roughly April to October and sell out, so book before you travel.

Public transport: Swiss postbuses run up the Verzasca valley from Locarno and stop at the dam, so this one genuinely works without a car.

  • Best for couples

    Ascona

The prettier lakeside promenade with smarter hotels and long dinners by the water. Quiet, expensive and a little sedate, which after a 220-metre drop may be the idea.

  • Quietest

    Lavertezzo and Sonogno, Verzasca valley

Stone villages beside the emerald river, with a handful of rustici and small hotels. Almost nothing is open in the evening and the valley road is slow.

Worth knowing before you book: Bungee slots and rooms both vanish around the Locarno Film Festival in early August. Check the jump operator's season dates before you fix travel.

Good to know

Book ahead
Slots sell out in summer and the season runs roughly April to October. Reserve well in advance for weekends and holidays.
Restrictions
Minimum age, weight limits and health conditions all apply. Read the operator's requirements when booking rather than on the day.
Weather
Jumps are cancelled in high wind or storms. Build a spare day into the trip if this is the reason you came.
Getting there
Locarno is the nearest town, reached by train from Zurich or Milan, and a local bus runs up the valley road to the dam.
Afterwards
The river below suits a recovery swim, but it is snow-fed, fast and deceptively strong after rain.
