Why go

The harbour cuts deep into the city, so water is never far away and the ferries double as sightseeing for the price of a bus fare. Ocean beaches line the eastern and northern edges, each with its own character and most with a tidal sea pool cut into the rocks. Mornings tend to go on galleries and coffee, afternoons on sand, and the clifftop walks between beaches cost nothing.

Five to seven nights covers the city, a couple of beaches and a day in the Blue Mountains. December to February is hot and busy, March and April often give the best swimming with fewer people, and winter stays mild and clear. Flights from the UK are long, so most visitors pair the city with somewhere else in Australia or break the journey in Asia.

From our guides

Bondi is the icon — surfers, sea pools, the coastal walk to Coogee that might be the world's best free attraction — but ferry-reached Manly arguably beats it, and harbour coves like Shark Beach hide in the eastern suburbs. Museums, bridge climbs and opera fill the mornings; the Pacific owns every afternoon. Summer runs December to February.

Things to do

  1. Bondi to Coogee coastal walk

About six kilometres of clifftop path linking beach after beach, past sea pools and a clifftop cemetery. Free, well signed and best done early.

  2. The Manly ferry

Thirty minutes across the harbour past the Opera House and the Heads, ending at a surf beach with a pine-lined promenade. The cheapest harbour cruise going.

  3. Opera House and Circular Quay

The tiled shells are best seen from the water or from the Botanic Garden headland. Guided tours go inside, and the forecourt steps are free.

  4. Ocean pools

Sea-filled pools are cut into the rocks at Bondi, Bronte, Coogee and beyond, most of them public and very cheap. Swimming laps as waves break over the wall is the local ritual.

  5. Royal Botanic Garden

Free harbourside gardens running from the Opera House to Mrs Macquarie's Chair, a sandstone bench with the classic bridge-and-Opera-House view behind it.

  6. Blue Mountains day trip

Two hours west by train to Katoomba, with eucalyptus valleys, the Three Sisters rock formation and walks down into the gorge. Cooler and often misty.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Sydney (SYD)

Nearest airport to Sydney, about 9km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Sydney

About 15 minutes from Sydney (SYD) into the centre on the airport rail link, or 20 to 30 minutes by taxi outside the rush.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

Trains, buses, light rail and the harbour ferries all run on one Opal card, and the ferry to Manly is worth riding for its own sake. Bondi is a bus from Bondi Junction station.

Public transport: Very good, especially the ferries. A car is only useful for trips out to the Blue Mountains.

International hotels in the centre, apartment-hotels everywhere, and a strong short-let market in the beach suburbs. Hostels cluster in Kings Cross and Bondi.

  • Best base overall

    Sydney CBD and The Rocks

Beside the harbour, the opera house and the ferry wharves, with trains to the airport and buses to the beaches. Expensive, and quiet at street level once the offices empty.

  • Best for couples

    Bondi

The famous beach, the sea pool and the start of the coastal walk to Coogee, with cafés and a good bar scene. No train, so a bus or ride from the city, and summer weekends are heaving.

  • Best with children

    Manly

Across the harbour by ferry, with a sheltered harbour beach on one side and surf on the other, plus flat cycling and the aquarium. The ferry commute is the best part of the day.

  • Best value

    Newtown and Surry Hills

Inner-city terraces turned pubs, restaurants and small hotels, cheaper than the harbour and on the train line. No beach, but the best eating and drinking in the city.

Worth knowing before you book: New Year's Eve harbour-view rooms are booked a year ahead with multi-night minimums, and Australian school holidays in January fill the beach suburbs.

Good to know

Sun
UV levels here are extreme by European standards and skin burns within minutes in summer. Hat, shirt, shade and high-factor cream, reapplied.
Swim safely
Swim between the red and yellow flags where lifesavers patrol. Rips are the main hazard, and unpatrolled beaches are best left alone.
Transport
Contactless bank cards work directly on trains, buses, ferries and light rail, with a daily cap. No need to buy a separate travel card.
Timing
Summer runs December to February and is hot and crowded. March, April and October give warm water, mild air and much better availability.
Jet lag
The flight from the UK takes around 24 hours. Give yourself a slow first day and use the morning light to reset.
