Why go

Few cities are built around a mountain this size. Table Mountain drops almost into the suburbs, the Atlantic sits on one side and False Bay on the other, and the whole peninsula narrows southward into a national park of fynbos, baboons and empty coast. You can be in a gallery at ten, on a beach at one and up a mountain for sunset, which is not an exaggeration but a fairly standard day.

Three or four nights covers the city; a week lets you add the winelands and a stretch of the Garden Route. Summer, roughly December to March, brings hot, dry days and the south-easter that locals call the Cape Doctor. Winter is green, wet and much quieter, and the best time for whales in False Bay. Come knowing that inequality here is visible and that safety advice is worth following properly.

From our guides

Clifton's four granite-boulder coves and Camps Bay's palm-lined sweep sit fifteen minutes from the centre, with the Twelve Apostles ridge glowing behind the sunbathers. The Atlantic side is famously icy — swimmers head round to Muizenberg on warmer False Bay. Summer, December to March, is beach season; book the Table Mountain cable car for late afternoon and watch the coast turn gold.

Things to do

  1. Table Mountain

Reach the flat summit by cable car or on foot up Platteklip Gorge, which takes two hours or so. The cableway shuts in high wind, so go on the clear day rather than the planned one.

  2. Kirstenbosch Gardens

Botanical gardens on the mountain's eastern flank, devoted to South African plants, with a raised walkway through the canopy and summer concerts on the lawns.

  3. Bo-Kaap

Steep cobbled streets of brightly painted houses below Signal Hill, home to the city's Cape Malay community and its cooking. Ask before photographing people's homes.

  4. Cape Point and the peninsula

The drive south ends in a reserve of cliffs, shipwreck coast and ostriches on the beach. Allow a full day and loop back along the False Bay side.

  5. Boulders Beach penguins

A colony of African penguins nests among granite boulders at Simon's Town, with boardwalks that keep visitors at a sensible distance and a swimmable beach next door.

  6. Constantia wine route

The oldest vineyards in the country sit twenty minutes from the centre, on cool slopes behind the mountain. Easy to combine with lunch and a walk in Tokai forest.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Cape Town (CPT)

Nearest airport to Cape Town, about 18km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Cape Town

About twenty-five minutes by car or airport shuttle from Cape Town (CPT) into the city centre, longer in rush hour.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

The City Bowl and V&A Waterfront are walkable, and the MyCiTi bus runs out to Camps Bay and Hout Bay. Clifton, Chapman's Peak and the Cape Point road all reward a hire car, and metered taxis or ride-hailing fill the gaps at night.

Public transport: MyCiTi buses cover the airport, the centre and the Atlantic seaboard reliably; the wider network is patchy and best avoided after dark.

Good to know

Safety
Take normal city precautions, use taxis or ride-hailing after dark, and do not walk mountain trails alone. Ask your accommodation which areas to avoid on foot.
The wind
The summer south-easter can be fierce, closing the cableway and stripping the beaches. Clifton's coves and Muizenberg are more sheltered on windy days.
Water temperature
The Atlantic beaches sit around 12–16°C even in high summer. False Bay, on the other side of the peninsula, is several degrees warmer.
Book ahead
Table Mountain cableway tickets bought online save a long queue, and the popular restaurants and winelands tastings fill weeks ahead over the festive season.
Driving
South Africa drives on the left, roads are good and a hire car is close to essential for the peninsula and winelands. Parking attendants expect a small tip.
