Sveti Stefan
Sveti Stefan's fortified islet is the landmark, but a holiday here is really about choosing a mainland base and the beaches you can use.

Why go
The fortified islet is the picture everyone knows, a huddle of stone roofs and terracotta on a rock tied to the mainland by a narrow causeway. The islet itself is private, so the pleasure lies in the view from the road above and the pink-shingle bays on either side. Water is clear and deep close in, the shore is stony rather than sandy, and wooded hills come almost down to the sea.
Pržno, ten minutes' walk north, makes a friendlier base, with konoba tables at the water's edge, while Budva's old town and its nightlife are a short drive away. Three or four nights fits, or use the place as one stop on an Adriatic drive between Kotor and Ulcinj. June and September bring warm sea without July's crowds. Bring something on your feet for the shingle.

From our guides
Consider Pržno for a village setting and compare the actual walk, road crossings and beach access from the property. Do not assume that an islet hotel, private beach or advertised beach service is operating: check access and opening arrangements directly before booking. Early summer or September is our starting point for a quieter visit, rather than a promise of empty coves.

Things to do
-
The view from the coast road
The classic angle looks down on the islet and its causeway from the main road above. There is a small viewing area, busiest at sunset and free.
-
Miločer beach and park
A former royal estate just north, with cedar and olive trees, a shaded path along the shore and two small beaches. The walking is the best part.
-
Pržno waterfront
A working fishing village turned small resort, with tables set out along a pebble cove and boats hauled up beside them. Grilled fish is the order.
-
Budva old town
A walled Venetian core about ten minutes away by road, with a citadel, narrow lanes and a beach strip that gets very lively after dark.
-
Bay of Kotor day trip
Under an hour north, a deep fjord-like bay with a walled town at its head and a stiff climb up the fortifications for the view.
-
Praskvica monastery
A small Orthodox monastery on the hillside above, founded in the fourteenth century, with frescoes and a quiet terrace looking down over the coast.

Where to stay
Apartments and small family hotels dominate, with a few luxury names around the islet. The islet itself is a private hotel, so the postcard view is from the outside.
-
Best base overall
Pržno
A small fishing cove ten minutes' walk from the causeway, with konobas on the water and a handful of apartments and hotels. Quiet, and the beach is small enough to fill by midday.

Sveti Stefan village
The mainland slope above the islet, with villas and apartments looking straight at the famous view. Steep paths down to the beaches and a road to cross.

Best for nightlife
Budva
Fifteen minutes north, with the old town, the biggest choice of rooms and the coast's clubs. Crowded and brash in August, which is either the appeal or the warning.
Find stays in Budva -
Best with children
Petrovac
A calmer resort town south along the coast, with a sandy bay, a promenade and family apartments. Less glamorous and noticeably cheaper than the Sveti Stefan stretch.
Find stays in Petrovac
Worth knowing before you book: The beaches either side of the causeway are largely private and charged by the sunbed in season, and August apartment rates roughly double with week minimums.

Good to know
- Access
- The islet is a private resort and closed to non-guests, so plan on admiring it from the shore rather than walking across the causeway.
- Beaches
- Some stretches are private with paid loungers, though public sections exist on both sides of the causeway. Look for the signs before you spread a towel.
- Pack this
- Swim shoes. The beaches are coarse pink shingle and the entries are stony, which small feet in particular find hard going.
- Driving
- The coast road is narrow and busy in summer, and parking near the causeway is limited and paid. Arrive early or walk in from Pržno.
- Timing
- July and August are hot, busy and expensive. June and September give warm sea, thinner crowds and much better light.
