Why go
The ridge running north from Lion's Head above Cape Town's city bowl, Signal Hill is reached by a short drive to a car park near the top, which makes it the easiest big view in the city. It looks west over Sea Point and the Atlantic, north towards Robben Island and back at Table Mountain. Cars fill the parking bays before sunset, and the atmosphere is closer to a picnic than a viewpoint.
Half an hour is enough, though most people arrive an hour before sunset with something to eat and drink. It pairs naturally with Bo-Kaap below and dinner in the city afterwards. Wind is the deciding factor, since the summer south-easter blows hard and can make the ridge thoroughly unpleasant. The area empties quickly after dark, so it is better visited with company than alone.

From our guides
Locals arrive with picnic blankets and something cold; do likewise. For extra commitment, book the sunset slot on Table Mountain's cableway instead and pop the question above a sea of cloud.

Things to do
-
The sunset viewpoint
The car park and grassy slope near the summit look straight out over the Atlantic. Arrive early on clear evenings to get a space.
-
Lion's Head
The peak at the southern end, climbed in about 90 minutes on a spiralling path with chains and ladders near the top.
-
The Noon Gun
A cannon on the lower slope fired at midday on weekdays since 1806, still used as a time signal heard across the city.
-
Bo-Kaap
The brightly painted Cape Malay quarter on the hillside below, with a small museum and a long history worth reading up on.
-
Table Mountain cableway
The rotating cable car up the main mountain, with sunset slots in summer. Weather closes it often, so check before booking.
-
Sea Point promenade
The long seafront walk below, good at the same hour and easier to reach on foot from the city centre.

Good to know
- Safety
- Go with others, keep valuables out of sight and leave before it is fully dark. Do not walk the road up alone at night.
- Wind

- Getting there
- It is a short drive or ride-hailing trip from the city bowl. There is no reliable public transport to the top.
- Timing
- Arrive around an hour before sunset for parking and light. Sunset is late in the southern summer and early in winter.
