The experience

The drop itself takes a few minutes and getting to the edge takes longer. From the upper cableway station a short path crosses the summit plateau to a ledge on the western side, where you are harnessed, checked and asked to lean back over a kilometre of Cape Town. Once your feet are flat on the rock, fear converts to concentration, and the last stretch is pure view.

Nobody flies to South Africa for this alone, so treat it as one morning of a longer stay. It runs in fair weather only and stops when the south easter blows, so build in a spare day rather than booking it for your last. Summer, roughly November to March, brings the steadiest conditions and the longest cableway queues. Anyone genuinely uneasy with heights and exposure should watch from the railings.

The walk out to the ledge

A ten minute path from the upper cableway station crosses the plateau, which gives you plenty of time to look at the drop before committing to it.

The line hangs over the Atlantic seaboard, with Camps Bay, Lion's Head and Robben Island laid out somewhere below your boots.

Signposted walks fan out from the top station, including the level route to Maclear's Beacon, the mountain's true high point at 1,086 metres.
Walking down Platteklip Gorge

The gorge is the direct way off the mountain on foot, steep and relentlessly stepped, and it takes a couple of hours going down.
Lion's Head at sunset

The neighbouring peak is a short spiralling climb with chains and ladders near the top, and it looks straight back at the abseil line.

Getting around

From the city it is a short drive or taxi to the lower cableway station, then the rotating cable car to the summit; the abseil point is a signposted ten-minute walk from the upper station.

Public transport: The MyCiTi bus network reaches the airport and the city, and a sightseeing bus runs to the cableway, but taxis and ride-hailing are how most visitors move around.

Good to know

Book ahead: Slots are limited and weather dependent. Morning bookings stand the best chance, before cloud settles over the summit.
Weather: Wind, not rain, is what cancels. Check whether the cableway is running the night before and again on the morning.
Pack this: Closed shoes with grip, a windproof layer and sunscreen. The summit runs several degrees colder than the city below.
Timing: Cableway queues are worst from late morning, so going up early clears both the queue and the crowd on the plateau.
Safety: Guides run a separate safety line alongside the abseil rope and brief you before you clip in. No experience is expected, but you must follow instructions calmly.
