Sepilok and the Kinabatangan
Sabah compresses Borneo's greatest hits into one loop: rehabilitated orangutans swinging into Sepilok's feeding platforms, the sun-bear sanctuary next door and river cruises on the Kinabatangan, where proboscis monkeys honk from the trees and pygmy elephants sometimes wade the shallows.

Why go
Sabah's eastern lowlands hold what remains of Borneo's riverine forest, squeezed between oil palm plantations and the sea. Around Sepilok, near Sandakan, three centres work with orangutans, sun bears and rainforest research. An hour or two south, the Kinabatangan river winds through a narrow corridor of jungle where wildlife concentrates along the banks, which is why boat cruises at dawn and dusk deliver so reliably.
Give it three or four nights: two at a river lodge and one near Sepilok. Trips are usually arranged as packages including cruises, meals and transfers, since independent travel out here is awkward. The drier months, roughly March to October, make forest walks easier, though wildlife is present year round. Expect humidity, insects and a conservation story that is not entirely comfortable to hear.

From our guides
Stay two nights at a river lodge rather than day-tripping — dawn and dusk cruises are when the riverbank comes alive. June to September is driest.

Things to do
-
Sepilok Orangutan Centre
A rehabilitation centre where orphaned and rescued orangutans are prepared for the wild, with feeding platforms viewed from raised boardwalks.
-
Bornean Sun Bear Centre
Next door, devoted to the world's smallest bear species. Its viewing platforms often give better sightings than the orangutan feedings do.
-
Rainforest Discovery Centre
A canopy walkway and towers above the Kabili-Sepilok forest, one of the easier places in Borneo for serious birdwatching.
-
Kinabatangan cruises
Small boats run at first light and late afternoon, when proboscis monkeys, macaques, hornbills and occasionally pygmy elephants gather at the water.
-
Gomantong Caves
Vast limestone chambers used for swiftlet nest harvesting, with bats leaving at dusk. Not for anyone squeamish about cockroaches.
-
Sandakan
The regional town, with a memorial park commemorating the wartime death marches and a busy central market by the water.

Sukau
The classic Kinabatangan river village, where lodges sit on the bank and boats leave from the jetty at dawn and dusk. Remote, humid and generally booked as a package with meals.

Worth knowing before you book: River lodges are small and the June to September dry months fill months ahead, and most quote packages with transfers that are hard to unbundle later.

Good to know
- Getting there
- Fly into Sandakan, usually via Kota Kinabalu. Lodges arrange road and river transfers, which is far simpler than doing it yourself.
- Stay overnight
- Day trips miss the dawn and dusk cruises, which is when the river works. Two nights on the Kinabatangan is the minimum worth doing.
- Pack this
- Long sleeves, leech socks for forest walks, strong insect repellent and a dry bag. Binoculars transform the boat cruises entirely.
- Photography
- A long lens helps, but so does patience. Guides spot far more than you will and use the boat to position you.
- Etiquette
- Keep your distance from orangutans and never feed wildlife. Bags are searched at the centres because macaques are practised thieves.
