Sea kayaking the Elaphiti Islands, Croatia

Happens around Elaphiti Islands, Croatia — nearest airport Dubrovnik (DBV), about 36km away.

The experience

The Elaphiti chain sits just off Dubrovnik, a scatter of low, pine-covered islands with hardly any cars and a great deal of empty shoreline. Paddling between them puts you at sea level, close enough to slip into caves and pull up on pebble coves that larger boats cannot reach. The Adriatic here stays calm through summer and clear enough to watch your paddle blade several metres beneath the surface.

Day trips run for much of the year from Dubrovnik and take a morning or an afternoon, with no experience required. Multi-day itineraries hop between Koločep, Lopud and Šipan, usually with luggage moved separately and nights spent ashore. June and September give warm water and manageable wind, while July and August add heat and traffic. The bora wind can cancel a day, so keep the schedule loose.

From our guides

From Dubrovnik, day trips round Lokrum's cliffs and caves; multi-day trips island-hop the Elaphitis, with luggage transferred and dinner waiting. The Adriatic in June is calm, warm and absurdly clear. Sore shoulders on day one, quiet smugness thereafter.

Make a trip of it

  1. Lopud

The prettiest of the three inhabited islands, entirely car-free, with a sandy bay called Šunj on its far side reached by a short walk inland.

  2. Koločep

The closest island to Dubrovnik, ringed by sea caves. The blue cave on its eastern side glows when the angle of light is right.

  3. Šipan

The largest and quietest Elaphite, with olive groves, ruined summer villas and two small harbours at either end of a green valley.

  4. Lokrum

A wooded island minutes from Dubrovnik's walls, with cliffs, a salt lake and free-roaming peacocks. The standard half-day paddle circles it.

  5. Sunset paddles

Afternoon trips time the return so you are still on the water as the light drops and the old city walls turn gold.

  6. Dubrovnik's walls

Walk the full circuit of the city ramparts on a rest day, ideally at opening time and before the cruise arrivals.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Dubrovnik (DBV)

Nearest airport to Elaphiti Islands, about 36km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Dubrovnik

About 30 to 40 minutes by shuttle bus or taxi from Dubrovnik (DBV) at Cilipi into the old town.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

Day trips launch from the beach below the city walls or from Gruz harbour, while multi-day trips take the ferry out to Kolocep, Lopud and Sipan, small islands where almost nothing is motorised.

Public transport: City buses cover Dubrovnik and regular ferries serve the Elaphiti islands from Gruz.

Where to base yourself

Apartments and rooms in private houses, resort hotels on the Lapad and Babin Kuk peninsulas, plus a few small hotels inside the walls and simple guesthouses on the islands.

  • Best base overall

    Dubrovnik Old Town

Inside the walls, with the kayak trips leaving from the beach beside Pile gate and everything else on foot. Rates are the highest on the coast and cruise days are crushing.

  • Best with children

    Lapad

A leafy peninsula with a shallow bay, a pedestrian promenade of restaurants and hotels with pools. A bus or boat into the old town, which is a fair price for the calm.

    Find stays in Lapad
  • Best value

    Gruz

The port district, with the ferry berths, the daily market and apartments at far friendlier rates. Workaday and a bus ride from the walls, but well connected to the islands.

  • Quietest

    Sipan

The largest Elaphiti island, an hour by ferry, with two sleepy villages, olive groves and very few cars. Perfect after the paddling, awkward if you want Dubrovnik at night.

Worth knowing before you book: June and September give calm seas without August prices, and multi day kayak trips include island accommodation. Check the cruise ship calendar before booking old town rooms.

Good to know

Fitness
Ordinary fitness is enough. Double kayaks are available for anyone unsure, and guides set a pace that suits the slowest boat.
Pack this
A rash vest or long sleeves, reef-safe sun cream and a hat. Sun reflected off the water burns shoulders faster than you expect.
Wind
Trips are cancelled when the bora blows, often with little notice. Book early in your stay so there is room to rearrange.
Dry bags
Operators supply dry bags, but bring a waterproof case for your phone and assume everything else will get wet.
Footwear
Pebble beaches and sea urchins make swim shoes worth having. Sandals with a heel strap work well for landings.
