Rigi Railways

Europe's first mountain railway has been climbing the 'Queen of the Mountains' since 1871, and Rigi still does the definitive Swiss day out: steamer from Lucerne to Vitznau, red carriages rising through orchards and cliff cuttings, and a summit panorama sweeping across thirteen lakes to a horizon crowded with Alps.

Why go

The mountain stands alone between three lakes, which is why the view from the top takes in so much: water on every side, the Alps to the south, and on clear days the ridge of the Black Forest far to the north. Two cog railways climb it from opposite sides and a cable car from a third, so the standard outing goes up one way and comes down another.

It works as a day out from Lucerne, Zug or even Zurich, and needs no equipment and very little fitness. Trains and boats run year-round, with snowshoeing and sledging replacing walking in winter. Late spring to October gives the clearest air and full access to the paths. Fog in the valleys often means sunshine on top, so check the summit webcam before writing the day off.

Things to do

  1. Rigi Kulm summit

At 1,798 metres the top is a broad grassy dome looking over Lake Lucerne, Lake Zug and Lake Lauerz. Walking up for sunrise is a long-standing Swiss tradition.

  2. Rigi Kaltbad

A mid-mountain terrace reached by cable car from Weggis, with a mineral bath and a chapel built into the rock. A good place to break the ascent.

  3. Felsenweg cliff path

A gentle circuit from Kaltbad cut into the cliff face, with short tunnels and a long drop to the water below. Under an hour, and suitable for most walkers.

  4. Winter sledging

From December the runs down from Rigi Staffel are prepared for toboggans, with sledges hired at the station. Ride the train back up and repeat.

  5. Lake Lucerne steamers

Paddle steamers cross from Lucerne to the villages at the foot of the mountain, and the hour on the water is half the pleasure of the day.

  6. Pilatus by contrast

Across the lake, Pilatus is steeper and rockier, served by the steepest cogwheel railway in the world. Many visitors do both on a longer Lucerne stay.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Zurich (ZRH)

Nearest airport to Rigi, about 45km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Lucerne

About an hour by direct train from the station beneath Zurich (ZRH) airport to Lucerne, with no change needed.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

From Lucerne take the lake steamer to Vitznau for the original cog railway, or the train to Arth-Goldau for the other rack line; a cable car climbs from Weggis.

Public transport: Excellent. Trains, boats and mountain railways run to one timetable and the Swiss Travel Pass covers the lot.

Where to stay

City hotels in Lucerne, lakeside family hotels in the villages, and a small number of mountain hotels on Rigi itself, some reachable only by rail. Holiday flats are common.

  • Best base overall

    Lucerne

The lake city with the covered bridge, trains everywhere and the steamer pier for Vitznau. Hotel rates are high and the old town gets crowded, but no other base is as flexible.

  • Best with children

    Weggis

A mild, palm fringed lakeside village with a lido, boats and the Rigi cable car from the door. Evenings are quiet and the choice of restaurants is small.

  • Best for couples

    Vitznau

The cogwheel railway's lower station, right on the water, with lake views from the platform. Little more than a few hotels and a jetty, so bring a book.

    Find stays in Vitznau
  • Quietest

    Rigi Kaltbad

Halfway up the mountain, car free and reached only by rail or cable car, with sunrise from the summit before the first train arrives. Cloud can swallow the view for days.

Worth knowing before you book: Summer weekends and the heritage steam days fill the mountain hotels, so book those early. A Swiss Travel Pass covers the railways and the boat, which changes the sums considerably.

Good to know

Getting there
Trains from Zurich reach Lucerne in about an hour, and boats or trains continue to Vitznau, Weggis and Goldau at the foot of the mountain.
Tickets
Swiss rail passes cover the mountain railways and the lake boats. Buying a combined round trip is simpler than paying for each separate leg.
Timing
Go early for clear air and to stay ahead of coach groups. Cloud often sits in the valley in autumn while the summit stays in sunshine.
Pack this
It is usually several degrees colder and windier at the top than by the lake. Take a jacket even in July, plus shoes for grassy paths.
Heritage runs
Vintage steam services operate on selected summer dates only and seats are limited. Check the special timetable before fixing your date.
