Procida

The Bay of Naples' smallest island got its close-up as Italy's Capital of Culture in 2022 — and in The Talented Mr Ripley before that — yet stays defiantly local.

Why go

Four square kilometres of volcanic rock in the Bay of Naples, and the least visited of the three main islands out here. Fishing still shapes the place: nets on the quay, boats in every colour, and Marina Corricella climbing the slope above its harbour in faded ochre, pink and blue. There are no grand hotels and few sights in the museum sense. The pleasure is walking, swimming and eating within a couple of streets.

Ferries and hydrofoils run from Naples and Pozzuoli in well under an hour, which makes a day trip easy and an overnight much better. Two or three nights is plenty, and Ischia sits twenty minutes further on if you want thermal spas and more space. May, June and September are the months to aim for; July and August bring Neapolitan holidaymakers and full ferries. Winter is quiet to the point of closure.

From our guides

Marina Corricella, a heap of fishermen's houses in faded pinks and yellows around a netted harbour, is one of the Mediterranean's great views. Stay near the harbour, eat lemon salad and just-landed anchovies, and visit in May before the Neapolitan summer crowd arrives by hydrofoil.

Things to do

  1. Marina Corricella

A crescent of stacked fishermen's houses reachable only on foot, with tables at the water's edge and no traffic. Best seen from the steps above at dusk.

  2. Terra Murata

The fortified upper town, with the abbey of San Michele and a former prison, giving the widest view over the island and across to Vesuvius.

  3. Chiaiolella and Vivara

The southern harbour, and the crescent-shaped nature reserve islet linked to it by a bridge, with access restricted for conservation.

  4. Pozzo Vecchio beach

A small dark-sand cove on the west coast, known locally as the beach from Il Postino, with clear water and a short walk in.

  5. Boat around the island

Small boats hired at the marinas reach coves the paths do not, and give the standard postcard view of Corricella from the sea.

  6. Lemons and seafood

The local lemon is huge and pithy, served as an insalata di limone, alongside anchovies, sea urchins and rabbit cooked alla procidana.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Napoli (NAP)

Nearest airport to Procida, about 26km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Procida

About 40 minutes by bus or taxi from Naples (NAP) to the ferry quays at Molo Beverello in the city or at Pozzuoli, then a hydrofoil or ferry to Procida taking roughly 25 minutes to an hour.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

The island is tiny: Marina Grande, where the boats dock, is a short walk from Marina Corricella down stepped lanes, and small buses and microtaxis climb to Terra Murata and the beaches.

Public transport: Frequent hydrofoils and ferries from Naples and Pozzuoli, plus a handful of island bus routes, cover everything a visitor needs.

Where to stay

Family run guesthouses, B and Bs and apartments inside old fishermen's houses. There are no resorts and barely a handful of proper hotels, so the whole island's bed count is small.

  • Best base overall

    Marina Grande

The ferry port and the island's working centre, with most of the rooms, the bus stop for everywhere else and shops open year round. Not the prettiest corner, but easily the most useful.

  • Best for couples

    Marina Corricella

The pastel fishermen's harbour itself, car free and reached only by steps. A few small guesthouses sit above the quay, so travel light, because your luggage comes down on foot.

  • Best with children

    Chiaiolella

The south west end, with sandy beaches, a shallow bay and the Vivara reserve over the causeway. Dining is quieter here, and you will want the bus to reach the port.

Worth knowing before you book: Procida has very few beds for its summer popularity, so August and the weeks either side go by late spring. Many owners shut entirely from November.

Good to know

Getting there
Ferries and faster hydrofoils leave from Naples, with shorter crossings from Pozzuoli. Rough seas cancel sailings, particularly in winter.
Driving
Bringing a car is restricted in high season and pointless anyway. The island is small, the streets are narrow and parking is scarce.
Cash or card
Cards are usually fine, but small bars, ferry kiosks and the fish market are easier with cash.
Timing
Day trippers arrive around eleven and leave by six. Mornings and evenings are the island at its best.
Steps
Corricella and Terra Murata are reached by long flights of steps with no vehicle access. Pack light and think about your luggage.
