Why go

A headland of yellow sandstone just south of Lagos, cut by the Atlantic into arches, tunnels and free-standing stacks that glow orange in low sun. Up top there is heath, a lighthouse and a boardwalk with the sea a long way below; down at the water, a staircase of well over 100 steps drops to a small landing where boats come and go. The scale is intimate rather than grand.

Half an hour covers the clifftop; a boat or kayak trip through the grottoes turns it into a morning. Most people fold it into a few days based in Lagos, which has a walkable old town, a proper beach scene and easy road links along the coast. Summer brings coach traffic and a crowded car park, so aim for early morning or the last hour of daylight. Spring and autumn are kinder throughout.

From our guides

Walk the clifftop boardwalk for the panorama, or descend the long staircase to water level where the rocks frame the sinking sun. It's free, rarely oversubscribed outside August and followed by some of the Algarve's best seafood ten minutes away. Quietly perfect.

Things to do

  1. The clifftop boardwalk

A short circuit of decking and packed earth around the headland, with railed viewpoints over the stacks. Flat, easy and reachable from the car park in minutes.

  2. The staircase to the water

More than a hundred steps drop to a small quay where the arches stand at eye level. The climb back up is the price of the best photographs.

  3. Grotto boat trips

Small boats thread the tunnels and sea caves beneath the headland, which is the only way to see most of them. Sea conditions decide whether they run.

  4. Praia do Camilo

A staircase beach a short walk north, with a tunnel through the rock to a second cove. Small, sheltered and busy by mid-morning in summer.

  5. Lagos old town

Whitewashed lanes, a ring of city walls and a compact centre for eating and drinking, ten minutes away by road and walkable from the town beaches.

  6. Sunset on the sandstone

The last hour of daylight turns the rock deep orange, which is why most people come at that time. Arrive early enough to claim a ledge.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Portimão (PRM)

Nearest airport to Algarve, about 11km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Lagos

About an hour by car west from Faro airport (FAO) on the A22, or a similar time by train from Faro to Lagos station.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

The headland is a twenty-minute walk or short taxi from Lagos centre, with a long staircase down to the water and small boats running out to the arches from the town marina.

Public transport: Trains and buses reach Lagos well, and a local bus plus a walk covers the clifftop.

Where to stay

Apartments and aparthotels dominate, with boutique guesthouses in the old town and villas on the cliffs. A few big resorts sit outside town; the centre has none.

  • Best base overall

    Lagos old town

Inside the walls, ten minutes from the clifftop path, with restaurants, the marina and a proper town life. Streets are lively until late and parking is a genuine problem.

  • Best value

    Odiáxere and Bensafrim

Inland villages a short drive north, where villas and rooms cost noticeably less. Rural and quiet, and a car is not optional.

Worth knowing before you book: August rates in Lagos roughly double and the town books out by spring. If you are driving, confirm the property has a parking space, because street parking near the old town is hopeless.

Good to know

Timing
First light and the final hour of the day are the quiet ones. Between eleven and four in August the boardwalk fills with coach groups.
Getting there
It is a signposted drive from Lagos, or a 45 minute clifftop walk. A taxi back saves the return leg in heat.
Pack this
Shoes with grip for the steps, water and sun cover. There is very little shade anywhere on the headland.
Boat trips
Swell cancels grotto trips regularly, especially outside summer. Keep a spare morning if it matters to you.
Safety
Sections of clifftop are unfenced and the sandstone crumbles. Stay behind the railings and off the overhangs.
