Deià
Forget the Magaluf clichés: Deià is a huddle of ochre houses in the Tramuntana mountains where Robert Graves wrote and the creative crowd still lingers.

Why go
Deià is tiny, a single steep street of ochre stone houses climbing between the Tramuntana mountains and the sea, with a cemetery on the hill above the church holding Robert Graves's grave among others drawn by the same light. The village has attracted artists and writers for a century, and something of that unhurried creative pace survives despite the smart hotels that have since arrived. Days are simple: a swim, a long lunch, a walk on the old mule paths lacing the mountainside.
It suits a short, romantic stay rather than a full holiday base, ideally paired with a hire car and a few nights elsewhere on Mallorca, such as Sóller or Palma. May, June and September bring warm, calm weather without the August crush, when the single beach shack and its handful of tables are booked solid. Nightlife is essentially non-existent, so this is one for couples who want quiet over choice.

From our guides
Days run swim-lunch-nap: a plunge at Cala Deià, grilled fish at the beach shack above the rocks, then evening drinks watching the sun drop behind the ridge. Come in May or October when the hairpin roads are calm, and book the beach restaurant several days ahead.

Things to do
-
Cala Deià
A small pebble cove below the village, reached by a steep path down from the road and busiest around midday.
-
Son Marroig
A cliffside estate once owned by an Austrian archduke, with gardens looking out over the sea and a small museum inside.
-
Robert Graves's house
The writer's former home, now a small museum covering his life and years in the village, with his old writing desk on display.
-
Tramuntana mule paths
Old stone-paved tracks connecting Deià to neighbouring villages through the mountains, still walkable today and shaded for much of the route.
-
Sóller
A nearby town reached by a vintage tram through the mountains, with orange groves and a handsome main square lined with cafes.
-
Sant Joan Baptista church
The hilltop church and cemetery that anchor the village, with wide views over the coast and Robert Graves's grave among the headstones.

Getting around
The village is steep but small, and it is roughly 20 minutes on foot down to Cala Deia. A car helps for Soller and the other coast villages.
Public transport: A coastal bus runs between Palma, Valldemossa, Deia and Port de Soller several times a day, which is enough if you are staying put.

Where to stay
A couple of well-known hillside hotels, small guesthouses, agroturismo estates in the terraces and rented village houses. No resorts, no chains and very few rooms in total.

Best base overall
Deià village
Ochre houses stacked on one hillside, walkable to the restaurants and the path down to the cove. Parking is genuinely awful and the village is expensive for what the rooms are.

Sóller and Port de Sóller
Fifteen minutes north, with a proper town, a tram, a sandy sheltered bay and more space for less money. Busier and less romantic than Deià.

Valldemossa
Another Tramuntana village down the coast road, with cheaper rooms and the Chopin monastery. Day-trip coaches arrive mid-morning and the evening is very quiet.

Llucalcari
A hamlet of a few houses between Deià and Sóller, with a mud-bath cove below and virtually no one about. There is nowhere to eat, so you drive for dinner.

Worth knowing before you book: The village has few beds, so May, June, September and October sell out early. Cala Deià restaurants need booking days ahead and shut for winter.
