Osaka
Osaka's motto is kuidaore — eat until you drop — and Dotonbori is where it happens, a canal of liquid neon flanked by mechanical crabs and the famous Glico runner sign.

Why go
Loud, low-rise and entirely unbothered by Kyoto's refinement, this is a working city that treats eating and drinking as its main civic activity. Namba and Dotonbori carry the neon and the crowds, Shinsekai does the older and scruffier version, and the lanes of Ura-Namba hide counters with six seats. Between meals there is a castle, a serious aquarium and a skyscraper with a hole through the top of it.
Two or three nights is enough for the city itself, and it works well as a base: Kyoto, Nara and Kobe are all within about an hour by train, which makes this the cheaper and livelier place to sleep. Summer is humid and heavy, spring and autumn are the pleasant months. Anyone after temples, gardens and quiet will get more from Kyoto and use this city for dinner.

From our guides
Work through takoyaki, okonomiyaki and kushikatsu skewers (dipping twice in the communal sauce is a genuine crime). When the crowds peak, duck into Hozenji Yokocho, a lantern-lit stone alley one block away where tiny bars serve the calmer nightcap.

Things to do
-
Dotonbori at night
The canal strip is the city's advertising board, with the running man sign, mechanical crabs and a solid wall of restaurants. Loud, crowded and worth an hour.
-
Hozenji Yokocho
A pair of narrow stone lanes one block from the canal, lit by lanterns and lined with small bars around a moss-covered shrine. Far quieter than everything near it.
-
Kuromon Ichiba market
A covered market of fish, fruit and grilled skewers where much of what you buy is eaten standing up. Best before the middle of the day.
-
Osaka Castle park
The reconstructed keep sits on massive stone ramparts inside a moated park that fills with blossom in spring and is one of the few green spaces in the centre.
-
Shinsekai and kushikatsu
A retro district under the Tsutenkaku tower where deep-fried skewers are the speciality and the one firm rule is that nobody dips twice in the shared sauce.
-
Umeda Sky Building
Two towers joined by a floating observatory with an open-air rooftop, giving the clearest sense of how far the city sprawls, particularly after dark.

Getting around
The subway and JR loop line cover the city easily, and Dotonbori, Namba and Shinsekai are best explored on foot.
Public transport: Excellent. Between the subway, the JR lines and the Shinkansen at Shin-Osaka, a car would be a liability.

Where to stay
Business hotels with compact rooms, capsule hotels and a growing supply of apartments. Family rooms are scarce, and many places charge per person rather than per room.
-
Best base overall
Namba and Shinsaibashi
The Minami end of town, a few minutes from Dotonbori's neon and on the subway lines that matter. It is loud until very late, so ask for a high floor away from the arcade.

Closest to the sights
Umeda and Kita
The northern station district, best if you are day-tripping to Kyoto, Nara or Himeji, with big hotels and department-store food halls. Corporate in feel and quieter after dark.

Best with children
Bay Area and Cosmosquare
Out towards the aquarium and Universal Studios, with roomier family hotels and quads that central Osaka rarely offers. Two changes on the metro to reach the food streets.

Best value
Tennoji and Shin-Imamiya
South of the centre, where business hotels and hostels cost noticeably less and the loop line puts Namba minutes away. Parts of the neighbourhood are rough at the edges.

Worth knowing before you book: Cherry blossom, Golden Week and the autumn colours empty the city of rooms and double the rates. Book those windows the moment dates are fixed, and check whether the rate includes taxes.

Good to know
- Getting there
- Kansai International is about an hour from the centre by train. Shinkansen services stop at Shin-Osaka, a few minutes north of the main station.
- Cash or card
- Cards are widely accepted, but small bars, market stalls and older restaurants often take cash only. Convenience-store machines accept foreign cards.
- Etiquette
- Standing counters are for eating rather than lingering, and the communal sauce pot is dipped once per skewer. Tipping is not expected anywhere.
- Crowds
- Dotonbori is shoulder to shoulder from early evening at weekends. Eat early, or walk a few streets east into the quieter lanes.
- Timing
- Late March to April and October to November give the best weather. August is hot and very humid.
