Why go

A gondola out of Kandersteg and a gentle twenty-minute walk deliver one of the most improbable sights in the Bernese Oberland: a turquoise lake held in a bowl of rock walls two thousand metres high, with waterfalls dropping straight into it and a glacier hanging above. The colour comes from rock flour in the meltwater and shifts through the day. The effort involved is almost comically small.

Most people give it half a day, which is enough for the lake, a walk and a meal. Stretch it with the panorama trail high above the water, or use Kandersteg as a base for a few days of proper walking. Summer is the season, with the toboggan run and rowing boats operating; in winter the lake freezes and the walk becomes a snow trail. Cloud kills the colour, so pick your day.

From our guides

Continue along the panorama trail above the water for the full amphitheatre effect, then row a wooden boat or ride the summer toboggan run back down. Effort-to-reward ratio: unbeatable.

Things to do

  1. The panorama trail

A balcony path climbing above the northern shore, giving the full amphitheatre view back across the lake to the peaks. Around two hours as a loop.

  2. Rowing boats

Wooden boats for hire at the lakeshore in summer, which is the only way to get out under the rock walls and appreciate their scale.

  3. The summer toboggan run

A metal rail sled run near the top station, with a chairlift back up. Popular with children and, without exception, their parents.

  4. Heuberg viewpoint

A steeper climb from the lake to a shoulder above the water, where the view opens out over the whole basin and the glacier at its head.

  5. Kandersteg village

A quiet valley base with wooden chalets, a long-standing scouting centre and the car-carrying rail tunnel through to the Valais.

  6. Blausee

A small, intensely blue spring-fed pool in woodland a few kilometres down the valley, with a short circular walk and glass-bottomed boats.

Where to stay

Traditional Swiss hotels, chalet apartments and two simple mountain inns at the lake. There are no resorts and no chains, and self-catering is often the sensible choice.

  • Best base overall

    Kandersteg

The valley village at the foot of the gondola, with the station, shops and a good spread of hotels. It suits early starts, though the village itself is workaday rather than picture-postcard.

  • Quietest

    Lakeside at Oeschinensee

Two mountain inns sit on the shore itself, so you get the lake at dusk and dawn without a soul about. Half board is effectively compulsory and rooms are simple.

  • Best value

    Frutigen

Ten minutes down the valley by train, with cheaper rooms and a supermarket. You lose the walk-out-of-the-door convenience but keep an easy morning connection.

  • Best with children

    Kandersteg Oeschiwald

The quieter end of the village near the gondola base, with family hotels, chalet apartments and flat paths to the campsite playground. Everything is a short push from the lift.

Worth knowing before you book: The lakeside inns take bookings a season ahead for summer weekends. Check the gondola's operating dates before fixing anything, since it closes for maintenance in spring and late autumn.

Good to know

Getting there
Trains reach Kandersteg from Bern and Interlaken, and the gondola station is a short walk or shuttle from the village.
Timing
Go early. The colour is best in morning sun, and the path from the top station fills up considerably by late morning in summer.
Footwear
The lake path is easy in trainers, but the panorama trail is a proper mountain path with loose sections. Boots are better.
Swimming
The water is glacier-fed and stays cold all summer. People do swim, briefly, and there is a small beach area at the near end.
Weather
In low cloud the lake loses its colour entirely. Check the webcams before buying gondola tickets and keep the day flexible.
