Why go

A rusted freighter lies half buried in white shingle at the bottom of a horseshoe of pale cliffs, with water so clear from above that boats appear to float on air. It is one of the most photographed coves in the Mediterranean, and for now it is a view rather than a beach: rockfalls have closed the cove to landing and swimming, with the closure extended more than once.

That changes what you plan. The clifftop platform above the cove and the boat trips that hold station offshore are the whole of the experience, and both take an hour or two rather than a day. Build them into a week on Zakynthos, where the west coast has sea caves and the south has turtle beaches. Anyone whose heart is set on swimming there should check the status before booking flights.

From our guides

You cannot currently walk on it. After repeated rockfalls the cove is closed to landing and swimming until at least 31 October 2026, the paths down are barriered, and boats are held back from the sand. That still leaves the view, which was always the best of it: the clifftop platform above the cove, and boat trips from Porto Vromi or Zakynthos Town that hold position offshore. Check the current status before booking — the closure has been extended more than once.

Things to do

  1. The clifftop viewing platform

A short walk from the car park above the cove gives the famous overhead angle. Go early or late, as the midday sun flattens the colour and the coaches arrive together.

  2. Boat trips from Porto Vromi

The nearest departure point on the west coast, with small boats running out to sit off the cove. Trips from Zakynthos Town and Agios Nikolaos take longer.

  3. Blue Caves at Cape Skinari

Sea arches at the island's northern tip where the reflected light turns the water electric. Usually combined with a shipwreck-view boat trip.

  4. Agios Georgios monastery

A quiet clifftop monastery near the viewpoint, with cypress trees and views along the west coast that almost nobody stops for.

  5. Laganas bay turtles

The bay in the south is a protected nesting site for loggerhead turtles, with rules on boats and beach use between May and October.

  6. Zakynthos Town

Rebuilt in Venetian style after the 1953 earthquake, with arcaded streets, a large central square and a Byzantine museum worth an hour.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Zakynthos (ZTH)

Nearest airport to Navagio Beach, about 26km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Zakynthos Town

About 10 to 15 minutes by taxi from Zakynthos airport (ZTH) into town; the north-west coast around Porto Vromi is an hour or so by car.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

Landing on the beach is closed, so the cove is seen from the clifftop viewing platform above Anafonitria, reached by car, or from boats out of Porto Vromi, Agios Nikolaos and Zakynthos Town that hold position offshore.

Public transport: Poor: buses serve the resorts rather than the viewpoint, so it is a hire car, a taxi or an organised boat and coach trip.

Where to stay

Package hotels and apartment blocks in the eastern resorts, studios and rooms in the villages, plus villas in the hills. Nothing at all beside the cove itself.

  • Best base overall

    Zakynthos Town

The island capital, with the widest choice of rooms, the port and boat trips that view the wreck from offshore. It is a town rather than a beach base, so you drive to swim.

  • Closest to the sights

    Volimes and Anafonitria

The northern villages nearest the clifftop viewing platform, so you can be there before the coaches. Choice is very limited and evenings mean one or two tavernas.

  • Best with children

    Alykes and Alykanas

North-east coast resorts with sandy, shallow beaches and family apartments, plus boat trips north to the cove. Quieter than the south, and the road up is winding.

  • Best value

    Laganas and Tsilivi

The big package resorts with the cheapest rooms on the island. Laganas is loud and young, Tsilivi calmer, and both are a long drive from the north-west cliffs.

Good to know

Access
Landing on the sand and swimming in the cove are prohibited under the current closure, and the paths down are barriered. Check the status before you book.
Safety
The cliff edge at the viewpoint is unfenced in places and the rock is friable. Stay behind the barriers, whatever you see other people doing.
Timing
Early morning gives the best light and the emptiest platform. Boat trips also run calmest before the afternoon wind picks up.
Sea conditions
Trips are cancelled outright in any swell, since the cove is exposed. Leave a spare day in your plans rather than banking on one.
Driving
The roads to the viewpoint are narrow and winding with limited parking. A small car is far easier than a large one up here.
