Muizenberg
Cape Town's learner wave rolls in slow, soft and endlessly forgiving across False Bay's shallows — noticeably warmer than the city's Atlantic side — in front of a row of Victorian bathing boxes painted like boiled sweets.

Why go
A long, flat, sandy beach on the warmer False Bay side of the Cape peninsula, backed by a row of Victorian bathing boxes in sweet-shop colours and a suburb of coffee shops, board hire and second-hand bookshops. The waves arrive slowly and break a long way out, which is why half of Cape Town learnt to surf here. Mountains rise directly behind, so the light in the afternoon is remarkable.
Almost nobody bases a whole holiday here, and that is fine: it is a half-hour from central Cape Town and sits on the road to the penguins at Boulders and the Cape Point reserve, so it slots into a peninsula day. Summer, roughly December to March, brings the warmest water and the friendliest waves. Strong swimmers looking for size will find the surf far too gentle.

From our guides
Surf schools cluster along the beachfront, shark spotters keep watch from the mountain above, and post-session coffee on Surfers Corner is a ritual. Summer, December to March, brings the friendliest conditions; hire everything on the beach and simply wade in.

Things to do
-
Surfers Corner
The beachfront strip where the surf schools, board hire and coffee queues concentrate. Everything you need is within fifty metres of the sand.
-
The bathing boxes
A line of small painted changing huts on the beach, photographed endlessly and best caught early before the shadows and the crowds arrive.
-
Boyes Drive
The high road above the village, with pull-ins looking down over the whole of False Bay. Whales are often visible from here between June and November.
-
Kalk Bay harbour
A working fishing harbour ten minutes along the coast, where boats land the catch and seals loiter for scraps. The village behind it is full of antique shops.
-
Boulders Beach penguins
A colony of African penguins nesting among granite boulders near Simon's Town, viewed from boardwalks. One of the few places you can swim near them.
-
St James tidal pool
A sheltered seawater pool next to more painted huts, calm enough for small children when the open sea is choppy.

Best base overall
Muizenberg village and Surfers Corner
Right behind the beach, with surf schools, hire shops and cafes on the same block. It is a suburb rather than a resort, so evenings are quiet and some streets need care after dark.

Good to know
- Water temperature
- False Bay runs several degrees warmer than the Atlantic side, but it is still cool. A shortie wetsuit makes a long session much more pleasant.
- Shark spotters
- Spotters watch the water from the mountain and use a flag system on the beach. Learn the colours before you paddle out and leave the water if the siren sounds.
- Safety
- Keep valuables out of sight and off the sand, and stick to busy stretches of beachfront after dark, as you would anywhere in the city.
- Timing
- Mornings are usually cleanest, before the south-easterly wind gets up in summer. Winter can bring glassy conditions and far fewer people.
- Getting there
- It is roughly thirty minutes by road from central Cape Town, and the coastal route via Kalk Bay and Simon's Town makes an easy day of it.
