The experience
Bwindi is dense, wet montane forest folded over a landscape of ridges, and the trek to a habituated gorilla family is a genuine slog through vines, mud and gradient. Then the guides stop, the machetes go down, and a family is simply there, feeding and grooming a few metres away. The hour that follows is timed to the minute and passes faster than any hour you have spent.
One trek is rarely a whole holiday. Most people build a week or ten days around it, adding savannah game drives, a crater-lake stopover and the long, scenic drive through the south-west. Book permits and lodges together, months ahead, since numbers are capped daily. It suits anyone with reasonable hill fitness; it does not suit tight schedules, as bad weather and long treks make timings unpredictable.

- Muddy, humbling, tightly regulated
From our guides
Treks in Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest earn the name: steep, muddy and anywhere from two to six hours each way, so honest hill fitness matters. Permits are capped at eight visitors per family per day and sell out months ahead, so book early through a licensed operator. Hire a porter; it funds the forest.

Make a trip of it
-
Buhoma sector
The longest-established base on the northern edge of the park, with several habituated families and the widest choice of places to stay just outside the gate.
-
Ruhija and Nkuringo sectors
Higher and quieter starting points on the eastern and southern sides. Treks from here can be steeper, but the forest views are the best in the park.
-
Gorilla habituation experience
A small number of permits allow four hours with a family still being habituated, rather than one. Physically harder and considerably more expensive.
-
Batwa cultural walks
Guided walks led by members of the forest's original inhabitants, covering plant use, hunting technique and the history of their displacement from the park.
-
Lake Bunyonyi
A deep, island-scattered lake a couple of hours away, bilharzia-free and good for swimming or a canoe. The standard place to recover afterwards.
-
Ishasha's tree-climbing lions
The southern sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, on the way north, where lions habitually drape themselves in fig trees through the heat of the day.
Getting there
-
Fly to
Entebbe (EBB)
Nearest airport to Bwindi, about 304km away as the crow flies.
-
Then
To Kisoro
Kisoro's airstrip (KXO) takes scheduled light aircraft from Entebbe in about an hour and a half; by road from Kampala it is a long day of nine to ten hours.

Getting around
Lodges near the Nkuringo and Rushaga sectors are one to two hours from Kisoro on rough tracks, so a 4x4 and driver are standard; briefings start early and the trek itself is entirely on foot.
Public transport: Effectively none for the park sectors: everyone travels with a licensed operator's vehicle or a lodge transfer.

Where to base yourself
Forest-edge lodges of every grade, from bandas and campsites to a few luxury properties, plus simple hotels in Kisoro. Nothing is close to a road you would call good.
-
Best base overall
Kisoro
The nearest town of any size to Bwindi's southern Nkuringo and Rushaga sectors, with fuel, banks and a range of rooms. The road in to the trailheads is still rough and slow.

Closest to the sights
Buhoma
The village at the northern park gate, walking distance from the briefing point. It is small and remote, so choice is limited and transfers from Kigali take most of a day.
Find stays in Buhoma -
Quietest
Nkuringo and Rushaga
Ridge-top lodges above the southern sectors, with the best views over the forest and short morning transfers. Steep access and no village life to speak of.

Best value
Lake Bunyonyi
An hour or so from the southern gates, with cheaper lodges and campsites on a beautiful bilharzia-free lake. Ideal for the days either side rather than trek mornings.

Worth knowing before you book: Gorilla permits are capped and sell out months ahead, and you must book the permit for a specific sector before choosing your lodge, not the other way round.

Good to know
- Permits
- Numbers are strictly limited per family per day and permits sell out many months in advance. Book through a licensed operator and fix your dates early.
- Fitness
- Treks run from two to six hours each way on steep, slippery ground. Sedan chairs can be arranged in advance for those who need them.
- Pack this
- Waterproofs, gaiters or long socks, gardening gloves for grabbing thorny vegetation, and boots you do not mind ruining. It rains most months.
- Photography
- Flash is banned and the forest is dark, so a fast lens matters more than a long one. Guides keep the group at a set distance from the animals.
- Health
- Visitors with colds or flu are turned away, because gorillas catch human respiratory infections. Masks are worn during the viewing hour.
