Menjangan
While the crowds fight over south Bali, Menjangan sits quietly inside West Bali National Park with the island's best snorkelling: a wall of coral starting in two metres of water, visibility that regularly hits thirty, and almost no current — the calm that gives beginners courage.

Why go
Menjangan sits inside West Bali National Park, a small island fringed by a coral wall that starts in barely two metres of water and drops away sharply, giving beginners and experienced snorkellers the same easy access to Bali's clearest visibility. Currents here are gentle compared with much of the island's coastline, which makes it an unusually forgiving place to learn or to simply drift along the reef edge without much effort.
It works best as an overnight stop in nearby Pemuteran rather than a rushed day trip from the crowded south, which can eat up most of a day in transit alone. Boats leave from Labuan Lalang jetty for the half-hour crossing, and mornings generally give the calmest water and best visibility. This suits snorkellers and divers more than sunbathers, since the beaches here are modest.

Quietest
Munduk
Up in the coffee and clove hills inland, cool at night, with waterfalls and rice terraces. It works as a second stop rather than a snorkelling base, given the winding descent.

Worth knowing before you book: Rooms are limited and July, August and Christmas book early, and the park charges a separate entry and boat fee that most guesthouses arrange on the day.
