Legoland Billund

The original Legoland, next to the actual LEGO factory, remains the best for the four-to-ten window: driving school with real licences, Miniland's astonishing brick cities and rides pitched at exactly the right level of scary.

Why go

The first Legoland opened in 1968 beside the factory that made the bricks, and it still feels like a park built by people more interested in building than in thrill rides. Miniland is the heart of it, with cities, harbours and airports assembled from tens of millions of pieces. Rides run from gentle to moderate, queues are civil, and the whole site is walkable in a day at a child's pace.

Billund has its own airport with direct flights from the UK, and the park is a few minutes away, which makes a two or three night trip perfectly practical. Pair it with the town's brick-built experience house for a second day, largely indoors. The season runs from spring to late October, with the park closed through winter. Older children and teenagers tend to find the rides tame.

Cheerful, orderly, built for children

From our guides

Pair it with LEGO House in Billund town — half museum, half infinite play session — which needs a separate pre-booked ticket. Two days covers both without rushing. Beyond about eleven, children get sniffy; time it well.

Things to do

  1. Miniland

Danish harbours, European capitals and space launches built at scale from millions of bricks, and still the part people remember.

  2. Driving School

Children take a short lesson, drive an electric car around a road layout with junctions and lights, then collect a printed licence.

  3. LEGO House

In Billund town, a separate building of galleries, huge brick pits and a basement of vintage sets. It needs its own timed ticket.

  4. Ninjago and Polar X-plorer

The liveliest two rides, an interactive shooting dark ride and a mid-size drop coaster, both fine for confident under-tens.

  5. Duplo land

A whole zone scaled for toddlers, with a small train, very gentle rides and shallow water play that occupies them for hours.

  6. Lalandia water park

A large indoor water park next door, and the standard answer to a wet day in this part of Jutland.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Billund (BLL)

The airport is on the doorstep.

  2. Then

    To Billund

Billund airport (BLL) is barely five minutes from the park, walkable in around twenty minutes or a short bus or taxi ride. It is one of the easiest arrivals in Europe.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

The park, LEGO House and the town hotels are all within walking distance of each other, so once you have arrived you can leave the car alone.

Public transport: Good enough. Buses connect Billund with Vejle and Kolding, which sit on the Danish mainline railway.

  • Best base overall

    Billund

The town is small, flat and built around the park and the LEGO factory, with the airport and LEGO House both within walking or cycling distance. There is little to it beyond that.

Legoland's own hotels and holiday village

Themed rooms at the park gates, with early entry and a short stagger back for naps, which matters with small children. Rates are high and they book out first.

  • Best value

    Vejle

A proper town half an hour east, with ordinary hotels at ordinary prices, a fjord and restaurants that are not aimed at families. You will drive in each morning.

  • Quietest

    Grindsted

A quiet market town fifteen minutes away with a couple of hotels and holiday cottages nearby. There is nothing to do there, which is rather the point after a park day.

Worth knowing before you book: The park closes for much of the winter, so check dates before booking flights. LEGO House needs its own ticket, bought ahead, and Danish summer holiday weeks fill everything.
