Le Morne
At Mauritius's south-western tip, Le Morne's public beach runs for kilometres beneath a brooding basalt mountain that is now a UNESCO World Heritage site — casuarina shade, a lagoon flat as glass, and kitesurfers streaking across the reef break beyond.

Why go
A basalt monolith rises some 550 metres straight out of the sea at Mauritius's south-western corner, with a public beach and a shallow lagoon curling around its base. The mountain carries real weight: it sheltered people escaping slavery, and is listed by UNESCO for that history. The water is warm, flat and consistently windy, which has made this the island's kitesurfing centre. Casuarina trees provide shade and picnic space behind the sand.
Most people stay in the hotels strung along the peninsula or nearby at Rivière Noire, and use the area as a base for the wilder south-west. Winter, from May to November, brings the wind and the dry weather, while the summer months are hotter, stiller and wetter. The mountain walk and the Black River Gorges are both close by. It is a quiet corner, with very little nightlife.

From our guides
The famous 'underwater waterfall' illusion lies just offshore, best admired by helicopter if the budget stretches. Go between May and November for dry, breezy days, and stay put for sunset behind the mountain — it is frankly absurd.

Things to do
-
Climbing Le Morne Brabant
A marked route climbs to a shoulder below the summit in roughly two hours. The final section is steep and may only be done with a guide.
-
One Eye and the reef pass
The break off the peninsula produces a left-hand wave that draws kitesurfers and windsurfers from around the world between June and September.
-
Le Morne public beach
Shallow, clear and safe for swimming, with casuarina shade behind it and the mountain rising directly at your back.
-
Black River Gorges National Park
Half an hour away, the island's largest tract of native forest, with waterfall viewpoints, endemic birds and a network of walking trails.
-
Chamarel
Inland and uphill, the coloured earths, a high waterfall and a working rum distillery make an easy half-day out of the sun.
-
Ile aux Bénitiers
Boats from La Gaulette cross to a small island with a sandbar, usually combined with dolphin watching off the coast at dawn.

Getting around
The public beach and the resorts sit at the foot of the mountain and are walkable from each other, but everything else on the island, including Chamarel and Black River Gorges, needs a car or a taxi.
Public transport: Buses run along the coast road towards Baie du Cap and Quatre Bornes, but they are slow and infrequent for a peninsula this far from the centre.

Where to stay
Large lagoon resorts on the peninsula, family guesthouses and self-catering studios in the villages, plus hill lodges inland. Independent restaurants are scarce near the resorts.
-
Best base overall
Le Morne peninsula
Resorts spread along the lagoon beneath the mountain, with kitesurfing, the long public beach and sunsets behind the basalt. It is isolated, so you eat where you sleep.

Best with children
Riviere Noire, or Black River
A lively coastal town north of Le Morne with supermarkets, restaurants, boat trips and dolphin swims. The beaches here are smaller than the lagoon strips further south.

La Gaulette
A fishing village at the foot of the mountain with guesthouses and self-catering studios at a fraction of resort prices. You drive or walk to the public beach for swimming.

Quietest
Chamarel
Up in the hills behind the coast, with rum distilleries, waterfalls and a few small lodges among the greenery. You are twenty minutes of hairpins from the sea.

Worth knowing before you book: May to November is dry but windy, which suits kitesurfers and not sunbathers. Hire a car; the south-west is a long way from the airport and taxi fares mount quickly.

Good to know
- Timing
- May to November is dry and windy, which suits watersports. December to April is hotter, with a cyclone risk between January and March.
- Getting there
- The airport is about forty-five minutes away on the motorway. Buses reach the area but take a long time.
- Swimming
- Currents run strongly at the reef passes and near the tip of the peninsula. Stay inside the lagoon unless you know the water.
- Sun
- Shade on the public beach is limited to the casuarinas, and ultraviolet levels are high all year round.
- Etiquette
- The mountain is a memorial site as much as a walk. The upper section is closed to unguided walkers, and that is enforced.
