Grace Bay lines the north shore of Providenciales; the airport is about 10 minutes' drive south-west of the beach.

Why go

Grace Bay wins beach-of-the-world polls with monotonous regularity, and standing on it you see why: mile after mile of powder-white sand slides into water striped every shade between mint and navy, kept glass-calm by an offshore barrier reef. Providenciales keeps things deliberately low-rise — resorts sit politely behind the dune line, motorised water sports are pushed elsewhere, and you can snorkel the reef straight off the sand.

From our guides

Regularly voted the best beach on the planet, and for once the voting public is right: miles of powder-soft sand inside a barrier reef that keeps the waves out and the water gin-clear. Toddlers potter in ankle-deep ripples while older children snorkel straight off the sand at Bight Reef, a five-minute stroll along the shore. Go in April or May, when honeymoon-grade weather coincides with shoulder-season prices and the crowds thin out.

    Getting around

The Grace Bay strip is walkable, with restaurants, shops and Bight Reef all within a stroll of the main hotels. Taxis handle evenings out, and boat trips leave from Turtle Cove and Blue Haven marinas.

From the airport

Providenciales International Airport (PLS) is a flat, roughly ten-minute drive from Grace Bay. Taxis charge a fixed per-person zone rate rather than running a meter, and most resorts can arrange a private transfer in advance:

Car hire

A rental car makes it easy to reach Chalk Sound, Smith's Reef and the island's other beaches beyond Grace Bay itself. International chains and long-running local operators both have a presence:

Good to know

Cash or card
The currency is the US dollar and cards are accepted everywhere. Prices are high, since almost all food is imported.
Timing
April to June gives dry weather at shoulder prices. Peak season runs from Christmas to Easter, and September is the hurricane peak.
Driving
Driving is on the left. A hire car helps for the reefs and lagoons, though the resorts are all walkable along the sand.
Etiquette
Motorised watersports are restricted along the main beach, which is why it stays calm. Reef-safe sunscreen is expected.
With kids
The shallow, waveless water suits toddlers unusually well, and Bight Reef is close enough for young snorkellers to reach from the beach.
